SanDisk Extreme CF Card FireWire Reader

Hi.

When I import files to my Mac, it doesn't copy all the photos. The FireWire CF Card reader mounts. I can see all the photos in the CF Card. But when I drag all of them, it says it's copying but not everything is copied. I have to repeat the process until all the files are copied.

Does anyone know about this issue with a FireWire CF Card reader with the latest Snow Leopard?

This only happened with 10.6.4 and onward.

MacBook Pro 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4GB, Mac OS X (10.6.5), KRK RP6CB Studio Monitor

Since no one's answered...

I didn't know Sandisk still made this thing. I beleive it came out in 2006 or 2007. A quick search on Sandisk's site, shows no driver or firmware updates, mentions "OS X 10.1" (I saw it, but can find the link), and only mentions " all Capacities - 2, 4 and 8GB." So the info seems a bit out of date, which corroborates the age of the product. [This post on the Sandisk forum|http://forums.sandisk.com/t5/Readers-adapters-and-all-other/Sandisk-Expre sscard-reader-for-eXtreme-CompactFlash-Cards/m-p/189160/highlight/true#M286] infers that the Firewire readers were discontinued, although that seems not to be true.

That said, does the issue happen with all of your CF cards or just one of them? (Or some of them?) Are the cards fast enough for the extra performance of the Firewire reader? (IOW, if they worked on a USB reader, but have issues with the FW reader, then perhaps they cards are too slow? I'm just guessing.) Or maybe even the cards are worn out. All flash memory will eventually wear out. Are these older cards? (More than 2 years old?)

It likely is a compatibility issue with 10.6.4, but I don't know of that many non-pro photographers that used a Firewire CF reader so don't hold your breath waiting for an answer here. If you can't get an answer from Sandisk, then you might have better luck in a photography based forum like [DPReview|http://www.dpreview.com>, especially something more pro oriented.

I have the ScanDisk Extreme FW reader, and I have no problem dragging ALL files from my card (16GB Extreme Pro card). I've also used it with other types of cards without encountering any problems. Have you tried reformatting the card? I am running 10.6.4 on iMac i7. I have had the occasional issue of the reader not mounting, but I think that's because I didn't have a solid connection. When I make sure the wires and card are solidly inserted, everything works fine.

Thanks guys for your inputs. I guess I have to do further testing also with my other CF card. I do have the Sandisk Extreme IV so that shouldn't be an issue with speed.

Also the files go straight to the MediaSmart server so will test if there is the occurrence when importing to the internal hard drive first. Although as I mentioned this same procedure is done post 10.6.4 and I had no issue then.

There shouldn't be a driver issue as this should have been built in the OS.

Will post back my findings.

Just an update to this topic. I copied <6GB worth of photo files (97 photos) from an 8GB SanDisk Ducati CF Flash card.

- No error when transferring these files straight to my computer. In a few short minutes, all 97 photo files were done.

- Incomplete file transfer occurred when I copied the same 97 photo files WIRELESSLY either from the SanDisk FireWire CF Card Reader or from the same files that resided in my computer hard drive. It took me several drag and drop attempts to have it finally copy everything.

- I then used Apple's "Image Capture" app to grab the 97 photo files from the SanDisk FireWire Card reader straight onto the MediaSmart server wirelessly. It was an extremely slow process, but it was able to grab all 97 files.

So I've realised that the error in copying did not come from the SanDisk FireWire Card Reader, but from transferring files wirelessly over WiFi from my computer to an AirPort and onto the HP MediaSmart server connected directly to the AirPort via the "DRAG AND DROP" method ever since I upgraded to 10.6.4.

I will repost my question in amended form on the proper thread.

Thanks for everyone's assistance and feedback!

I have a SanDisk Extreme FireWire Reader and a MBP i7 computer running 10.6.5. I bought the reader in 2010 and have used it (with out issue) countless times.
Today, my card reader does not mount on my MBP i7 running 10.6.5. I went to the apple store and it doesn't work on numerous i7 10.6.5 computers. The reader works on other macs fine. It works on my core 2 duu fine. Are others having this issue or is this a fluke?

I have the Lexar Professional ExpressCard Compact Flash adapter... and it works perfectly as expected on my old MacBook Pro (late 2009). However on my brand-new 2011 MBP 17" I have to have the thing in the slot with a card in it when I turn the computer on or it won't recognize the card at all, ever.

As long as I do that, however, everything works exactly as expected again... I can eject it, change cards, etc., and the whole time everything works perfectly.

Incidentally both computers are running 10.6.6, but the older machine is an upgrade job and the new Mac came with 10.6.6 pre-installed.
