iMac boot problem

iMac boot problem

After pressing power button, computer will show initial loading screen with apple logo, loading symbol, and grey background for around 15 seconds before it restarts on its own and does the same thing again. Cannot get past this initial cycle. Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks.

iMac G5 Intel-based, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Hi - here's a couple of initial steps you can try.
Reset the SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964 (scroll down the page for instructions for your particular Mac).
Reset PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379

There are other things to try if these suggestions don't help - let us know how you get on.

another usual troubleshooting step would be to boot into _*safe mode*_, then reboot normally.

the computer does acknowledge when i reset the smc or pram. any ideas?

The computer will not boot into safe mode. Any other ideas?

Have you tried booting from the install disk that came with the Mac? Disk in drive and press the start button while holding down the 'C' key. If it boots you could try running Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
