burning a .AVI file onto a dvd in order to play on a normal DVD player? How?

I am sure the subject line speaks for its self.I am pretty new on how to do this and have a few .AVI files that i need to be able to burn onto a DVD(DVD-R) that can then play on my dvd player and NOT just my Mac or someone elses.

Tried to google this of course before asking anything here. I have a copy of "Burn" which pretty much burned the AVI file on to my DVD as a file, kinda like a data disk but would not play the movie.

I also have a copy of "Visual Hub" which seems to allow me to convert my AVI into a few different types of files, I tried mpg and dvd but they all did not play on my DVD players. I tried a few and in my PS3 none worked.

I have seen some Youtube videos online that show you how to do it on iDVD but doing it that way seems to be a lengthy process and from what I read , it brings the quality of the movie down.I tried it this way but the movie was only able to play for a few min then it cut off

how do I do this,do I need some sort of software? do I need a different disk? Do I need a different type of burner? My brother did it on this machine a few months back before he gave it to me and headed out to the war. I know a bunch of PC users/ friends who do this all the time and they play on their dvd players or mine for that fact.

any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Hi, I think it mostly depends on what features the Player has & which formats it understands.

Might look at the free HandBrake...

Or find an older version of Toast that'll run on 10.4...

Or Dragon Burn...

I'm using VH as I type. To use with an .avi file................

Open VH
Select DVD
Since you live in the USofA select NTSC
*Author as DVD* is checked
Drag the avi file to VH
Click the Start button

I use Disk Utility to burn. Never tried using VH to burn.

A key element is you don't just need to convert the file to a format that will play on a DVD player (mpeg2) but also author the series of files that structure the whole thing for a DVD player. As others have suggested, VisualHub, and Toast are reported to do the conversion plus authoring, though I have not used either. Handbrake does not convert for DVD. Other applications will encode to mpeg2 but that then leaves the authoring yet to be done.

An alternative is to buy a DVD player that will play AVIs directly. In the long run this will save a lot of computing time and DVDs. I have one that will play several popular computer formats (AVI, mp4, and others) directly off a flash (or other USB) drive.

Thanks guys! It looks like I just ended up finding a old copy of Toast 9 and was able to burn the avil to DVD. takes a while to do(about an hour and a half or so) but I am sure its due to my machine being a bit old and the speed of the burner. I would like to upgrade to snow leopard to be able to use the newer programs buts its just too much money, I would have to get the box edition of snow leopard which is like $180 or so. any who thank you so much guys! : D
