Can I use an Australian iPad charger in the USA?

Hi,

Travelling to the USA and Japan soon, can I use my iPad charger connected to a simple Australia to USA converter?

My brother is in the USA right now an apparently fried his iPhone, so I'm a bit concerned.

Also, could the iPhone use the same charger?

Yes, voltage is not a problem but, as you suspected, the plug won't fit. You'll need an inexpensive mechanical adapter.

Yes, the charger is rated 100-240 volts and 50-60 Hertz. You only need a plug converter. You may be able to find that in Australia before leaving. Might be a bit more difficult to find here. Apple also sells a World Traveler Kit that includes plugs for most major countries.

Will they do? I'm reluctant at the moment to buy anything more than I need to, and Apple stuff is always that bit more pricey.

The iPad charger delivers 10 watts, the iPhone charger 5 watts. You can use the iPhone charger with the iPad but charges slower. Using the iPad charger with the iPhone does not sound like a very good idea...too much power delivery.

I'm thinking that the kit is intended to convert from U.S. plug to "everything else." It might not help going from Aussie to U.S. Your suggestion about checking in Australia first is probably best.

The US adapter is like the grounded outlets here, as long as the input side matches the charger pin configuration sold in Aus you should be ok.

The world kit does not "convert" from US, but replaces the pin block on the charger. Pin piece slides off to the side, slide on the pin piece for the appropriate country configuration. The kit has a pin piece for each country listed on it.

Then the the charger or the phone was bad.
The charger converts the AC voltage to 5 VDC for the phone.

Thanks for the answers, turns out my brother's phone was fried when the moron plugged his usb cable into a universal power adaptor with a usb in port.
