Where did my text messages go?

Just upgraded my iPhone 3G software to version iOS 4 and lost all my text messages. Is there any way to get them back? I did get my voice mail messages back when I entered my voice mail password.

Did you set the phone up as a new phone or apply a restored backup when you upgraded?

I just upgraded the software, not the phone--so I didn't have to set the phone up. Everything synced just fine (contacts, voice mail, etc.)--I did have to go find my pictures and import them specially (so my assigned backgrounds and ringtones didn't transfer or sync), but the main problem is the lost texts. I have the option to restore my old version, but that will delete all current data. I guess that wouldn't be a problem right now, since I don't have new apps or new texts that would be lost, but then does that mean I can't use iOS 4?

Your voicemail is not an application by Apple, hence it is saved in a different server than your iOS ones and it doesn't matter what your software is to keep them and have them but your text messages ARE so you won't keep them.

Thanks for the reply and explanation. I wish I'd known in advance that I was going to lose my text messages, but I think I've recovered most of the information I had there. Just an inconvenience!
