Just installed the new ATV last night, ran the upgrade and tested it briefly with my iPhone and iPad to make sure Airplay was working. It does work fine with videos and music -- however: today I was proudly showing off the whole system to my wife and tried to show photos on the TV via Airplay when it failed. The ATV would get stuck on the first photo, or else get a few photos into a slideshow before crapping out. In each case, it would be stuck on the last photo onscreen, and the AirPlay icon would eventually disappear from the iPhone screen. Slideshows would say they were streaming via AirPlay but they would be frozen on the TV.
Setup: iPhone 3GS (fully updated), ATV2 (fully updated), Apple Airport WiFi network (running in Bridge mode, extended from upstairs Time Capsule in b/g compatible mode).
MacPro 2.66, MBook Pro 2.8, 16GB iPhone 3GS,
Mac OS X (10.5.8)
The first photo album I tried was working OK, if a bit laggy (3-4 second delay between swiping the photo on the iPhone before it changed on the TV). Then I went back to the original album that gave me trouble the first time and the same thing happened: first photo would get stuck on the screen, and only pressing 'Menu' on the remote would work to return it to normal. This time I noticed that when the AirPlay icon was disappearing from the top of the photo bar, it was because my iPhone was dropping the Wifi connection and going to 3G! Tried the iPad after a restart and it's similar issues: freezing, dropped connections and no consistent photo playback.
Is anyone else seeing this with just photos? If not then maybe it's my network setup -- though I surprised that video over Airplay works just fine and you would think that's more taxing than just displaying photos.
I have the same problem. All music and video work through airplay, but when i want to show photos via airplay on slide show nothing happens whatsoever.??
FWIW, I just tried quitting the Photos app from the multitasking drawer and restarting it, as well as the latest ATV software update. No difference in results.
I believe that I have a fix/workaround. I had the same issue and was able to get it to work by doing this:
- In iTunes, click Advanced....Choose Photos to Share
- In the top dropdown box with the double arrows, change the location on where to share from (for example, I changed it from the default of My Pictures to a sub folder called 2010). Close this dialog box by clicking Select Folder.
- Make sure any subfolders are also selected in the Folders box (I had some folders below 2010 that were listed in the Folders box)
- Click the APPLY button! (the apply button was not enabled prior to this change)
Same thing here. Video and music work without fail but photos display sporadically if at all. I have two ATV2's and both exhibit the same behavior. I have tried to display photos from two different iPhones with the same results. All devices are on the same wireless network. I have swapped out an Airport Extreme for a Cisco router with no difference in behavior. Appears to be time for Apple to update some software.
Hey BurghFan, thanks for commenting. But your workaround sounds like it's just for streaming photos from your Mac to the ATV2 (which I haven't even tried yet). This solution won't apply to iOS devices...
I am having the same problem with my iPhone 4 (latest update) and ATV2 (latest update). I can stream music and videos from my iTunes app and YouTube videos from the YouTube app, but when I try to stream photos from the Photo App, it keeps freezing on the first pic, then my iPhone loses WiFi connection. It only happens with Photos. I never lose WiFi with any of the other AirPlay functions. I tried resetting my iPhone, ATV2, wireless router and nothing seems to help. I thought it was my wireless network that was the problem, but now I see that it's a bug with the Photos app and Airplay. Hopefully Apple will fix this in the next update soon.
Hi I had the same thing after I hooked up Apple Tv I read your posts then went to my Apple Tv and it wanted to update. after update photos streamed fine.
I am having the same problem: AirPlay works fine with audio from the iPhone, however, the AirPlay button does not appear as an option for any photos. Tried resetting iPhone and Apple TV to no avail. Apple TV showed no software updates available yesterday, but I just checked again and it shows one update. Hopefully that solves the problem.
