Q: RESTORE FROM BACKUP does NOT restore everything. WHY APPLE?

I had a 3GS. I backed it up via iTunes.

Then I got a 4G. I restored from backup.

Guess what? All apps DID NOT RESTORE. WOW! I've heard this same thing happened to a coworker.

All the Apple employees, AT&T employees... WRONG. Apparantly, restore does not exactly work or it's not as simple as these folks say it is. This is really screwed up. I've heard 2 cases of this happening now. So why does the restore TO 4G, from a 3GS backup NOT working?

I honestly can understand your pain. I've had a LOT of progress on the apps I have, and not too long ago, the screen shattered. So now I need a new one. I want to back it up, AND save my progress on the apps. Why can't I do that? My answer: Apple was possibly too lazy too find out a way to back those files up. Or something else.

I even had to RE-CREATE MY APPLE ID JUST TO REPLY TO THIS. What the heck Apple?!

At least I have my music.

I think you are mistaken. I am havin the same issue since the latest iTunes update. The latest version of iTunes does not completely backup all the usual info and settings. I tested manual backups in iTunes vs iCloud backups on the same days. In every case the iCloud backu restored EVERYTHING perfectly whereas the iTunes backups were missing apps and apps on screen locations were wrong that iCloud had no problem restoring.

Apple employees please refrain from giving information read off a cheat card. Obviously they are either wrong or out of date. Up unti lthe latest iTunes updates every iTunes restore worked without any issues. Now there are issues, as stated by others in this thread, with iTunes backups.

So, please, quit telling us that there's nothing wrong and don't provide quote from another thread that really has no relevance to this specific issue. Instead let us know that yes, you acknowledge there is yet another issue with iTunes and that either a, it's being addressed now or b, that you'll pass on this issue to developement to work out a fix.

I am so fed up with replies to questions that are no help, point us in random direction and do nothing to help Apple customers at all. Shame on you Apple.

Isn't it time you understood that these forums are not a communication channel to Apple? If you want to moan at Apple, moan at Apple, not us users. There are no Apple employees here.  Happy Christmas.

The Community Support Specialists (black apple) only respond to posts (in a few select forums) that have gone unanswered for more than 24 hours and meet certain other criteria. They are not  responding in this sort of thread.

Messages are part of the back up. They will be transferred to the new phone.

After skimming through the 12 pages of this thread, I didn't see a solution.

    Q) Is there a way to make itunes do a true back up of everything from my iphone 5s?

    Q) If not, is there another program that will back up everything from my iphone 5s?

My problem is that I have ~236 GB + lossless music collection of ripped albums so I need to transcode the collection to a lower quality so it will fit on my 64 GB iphone. No, I don't want to waste time picking and choosing music. Today I'm trying on the fly 128 kbps VBR AAC encoding to get it all down to what I hope will be less than about 50 GB. In the past I've tried a few other approaches. I've used 3rd party software to transcode and import music to the iphone. I've also tried letting itunes create duplicates of all songs within itunes and then sync only the lower quality 'checked' songs from within itunes to the iphone. But the first approach, using 3rd party apps, eliminates the whole streamlined beneift of buying into the expensive Apple connected model that allows automatic sync between devices. Using the second approach, creating duplicates within my MacBookPro music collection makes my collection messy and hard to use. Several Apple staff recommended I reduce the quality of the archive quality lossless music collection. Clearly they had no appreciation for future proofing or the benefit of maintaining audio quality.

The solution I think I need is either:

    a) itunes ability to create 2 libraries active simultaneously that self sync to each other on my MBP.  When I rip a CD it would encode in lossless and create a duplicate lossy copy. When I connect my iphone it syncs to the lower quality library but I can still play my high quality library.

    b) itunes ability to back up my entire iphone with media such as music included, so I don't have to spend ~ 15 hours to re-transcode music upon each need to restore or upgrade to future phones.

(This issue was something I've looked for, for a long time, as it was easy enough to predict the need for. But I was unable to find a good solution. Unfortunately it was made necessary yesterday when I updated to ios 7.1 and found my iphone bricked requiring all data to be deleted and restored from the most recent backup. That notably did not include music.)

After every Sync, iTunes shows that my iPhone was backed-up at the same time.  HOWEVER, if I initiate a Backup right After a Sync, iTunes will usually report that there are Apps on my iPhone that are not in my iTunes Library, and if they are not transferred to my iTunes Library, they will not be restored in a Restore process...

So WHY does a Sync NOT copy the Apps from the iPhone to the iTunes Library?  "Sync" implies by its name that it is synchronizing iTunes & the iPhone -- yet it seems to only be a one-way sync where Apps are concerned...

What is wrong with this picture?

If you update apps directly on your phone the phone will have a newer version than the one in your iTunes library. That's when you get that message. If you accept the offer the newer apps will be copied to iTunes on your computer. This message will repeat the next time you update apps on your phone followed by a sync. It's only displaying that message to give you the option on not syncing the latest version back to your iTunes library.

I think it also applies to Apps purchased on the iPhone versus via iTunes on your computer.

Yes, to apps, music and videos purchased on the phone, as well as app updates.

This is pretty damned shocking. And the apple fanboys on here acting like we are idiots for being suprised that the 'back up' system does not actually back up everything is amazing. I'm sorry I don't spend hours upon hours learning every little nuance of these extremely nebulous OS designs. I'm busy. Just need my phone backed up and restored, with everything in place, as quickly as possible. When I spend several hundred dollars on a freaking telephone it should be pretty seamless. And of course, I'm the idiot of the philistine universe for even remotely being upset about this.

The iTunes backup DOES back up everything on your iPhone when you back up. It backs up your settings and data to a sqlite database, and your music, videos and apps purchased on the iPhone to the iTunes library (it askes you first if you want to). It doesn't back up your non-iTunes music because it is already on your computer, as that's the only way it could have gotten to your iPhone. It doesn't create a DUPLICATE of content already in your iTunes library because most users don't have up to the 64GB to spare on the hard drives.
