Disable home screen animation?

Is there some way to disable the home screen animation in iOS4? I'm referring to when you return to the home (springboard) screen from either an app or the lock screen, and the icons/folders slide in from the edges.

This has been around since iOS 4.x, and is annoyingly slow and unnecessary on an iPhone 3G. There must be a simple way to switch it off, does anyone know how?
