Re: 10.6.5 Printing issues–Canon Pixma MG 6150

I was thinking of buying the subject printer and contacted Canon as I had a query on Wi-Fi connectivity. I was amazed to receive the advice, that I should delay buying a printer, until such time as the issues arising from the new 10.6.5 version of Snow Leopard, had been corrected. This seems to me to be an incredible situation, as the agent said that this applied to all printers. What is going on here, I thought that upgrades were supposed to improve the situation not cause massive problems. Can somebody please advise me what the latest situation is, regarding the printer issues and particularly any concerning the Canon Pixma MG 6150.

What issues did Canon refer to? Does "all printers" mean all Canon printers or all brands of printers?

This thread - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2646068&tstart=0 - has a fix for the Canon installer if that's relevant.

Hi Pahu,

Thanks for your info. that all your Canon Pixma MG 6150's are working OK. Are you saying that you had no issues or is this to do with the thread that John Blanchard refers to, where there is a 'fix' for the Canon Installer? If it is then as a layman it seems daunting! I bought an iMac because I thought that devices just 'worked' with it. Not to have to 'fix' them to make them work.

Yes. I have had no issues running the installers and adding the network printers.

The thread that John has linked to is not going to be an issue for most Mac owners. If you did a customized installation of 10.6 and chose not to install any printer drivers then two folders on your Mac would not get created and consequently the MG driver would not be able to copy the PPD for the printer. This is turn would mean that you would not be able to select the MG from the model list.

But, for the majority of the 10.6 installations, these folders will exist because the user (or the Apple staff for a new Mac) does not customize the installation and allows the included OS X drivers to be added. This then permits the MG driver installation to complete successfully.

And note that this issue has nothing to do with the wireless networking of the printer. This uninformed Canon representative you spoke with obviously has little understanding of Mac's and is basing his/her comment on hearsay - not fact.

Hello Bill,

The 6C10 error is a valve cam sensor error. This can occur when the print head tries to purge ink during the cleaning cycle. Given that you mention not having installed the ink cartridges then this will be the cause of the error. The cartridges must be installed for the printer to power up correctly.

Hi Pahu,
Your suggestion makes eminent sense and I did think this was a possibility but I decided not to as the instructions say that the printer should just be plugged in and the language etc. entered and then put in the print head and cartridges. Could Canon have made a mistake as I do not think that I have misread the instructions. I am nervous about unwrapping the cartridges and then finding I still get the error message. Should I just do as you say?I appreciate your advice as I am not used to Canon.

Having read many a user and service manual over the years it is very likely there is a mistake in the documentation. With all my printers I have always installed the print head and cartridges the second after powering on the printer. And I've never had an issue
.

Yes. Installing the head and cartridges is a required setup step and their installation won't cause this error message - a different would occur if you don't install the head or inks correctly. The valve is part of the body, not the head or cartridge, and if it still shows the error after installing the head and inks then doing so won't exclude you from warranty.

Hi Pahu,

Can you advise me? I am trying to set the printer up wirelessly on an iMac i5 MacOSX 10.6.6 and a Windows XP SP2 laptop. I am getting confused with the requirement for Network Name and Key! I have a Router Ref. a Router Encryption No. (which I use to connect my iPhone) and a WEP key No. I propose to use Easy Install. Any idea which I use? Also it is not clear to me whether the software is installed on the computers first or after connecting to the router. I do find Canon's instructions, confusing to the layman. If you can help I would be very grateful.

Hello Bill,

You have the settings that you require, just looks like the naming is causing you some grief.

With the Easy Setup the machine will do an automatic search for any wireless network it can find. Those found will be listed once the search is complete. So you should recognise the name of your network from the iPhone setup. Select the correct name and then you will be prompted to enter the passphrase. This is the WEP key that you also used on the iPhone. Once you enter the passphrase and press OK the machines blue WiFi light will blank as it tries to connect. Once it has connected to your wireless network the WiFi light will stay lit and a message will appear stating that it is connected.

Now that the printer is connected to your network you can install the printer driver for starters. With the driver installed you can then create the printer queue in the Mac. Open System Preferences > Print & Fax and click the + button under the Printers list. A window will appear with some icons. Select the Default icon and the MG should appear in the list (assuming the Mac is connected to the same wireless network). Note that the MG scanner component will appear quickly. But if you wait a bit longer the MG printer component will also appear, shown with a heap of numbers and letters after its name and the Kind column showing 'canonijnetwork'. Select this and watch the Print Using menu. It should automatically change to 'Canon MG6100 series'. When it does then click Add to complete the printer queue creation. Now you can try printing to it.

If you want to now install the scanner driver and then use the Print & Fax to add the scanner, this time selecting the MG that shows Bonjour Scanner in the Kind column.

With just these two drivers installed you will be able to print and scan from the Mac. For scanning you can use Image Capture or Preview that are included with OS X. Or if you want to install the MP Navigator program from the CD then you can.

Hope this gets you started and of course reply if needed.

Hi Pahu

I am now back home, and have tried to set up the printer, but without success. I had to resort to contacting the Canon support team and was very quickly told that the printer had an 'internal hardware problem' and would need to be returned. I'm now in the process of sending the printer back to the retailer, who of course will not send me a replacement, until I have returned the original item. Fortunately I still have my Epson RX 500, which although not wireless

Hopefully, when I finally get a Canon Printer that works, you advice will help me to set it up. I will keep you posted.
