Q: Final Cut Server on the SAN?

Hey everybody,

I'm new to Final Cut Server and SANs in general. I've got a Mac Pro running a SAN, and my question is do I have to install Final Cut Server on a separate machine, or is it ok to install and run it on the machine that's managing the SAN? Is it best to just get another Mac Pro and have it run the server?

Another question, I need to enable remote access to Final Cut Server. Do I need to get Snow Leopard Server and set up a VPN or is there some other where to do this?

    On question 2.... I have a laptop with a VPN using IPSecuritas that our IT guy set up before we installed FCSvr. I did the FCS install on the local network at work, brought it home, fired it up and it's just like it's at work, just a little slower. Apparently there is optional encryption going on in the VPN connection that slows things down a bit. We have FIOS which, this morning, is measuring almost 15Mbps up and 4.5 Mbps down. Very usable for small projects, I would not want to checkout a 90 min documentary from home.

    You don't want FSCvr to run on the same Mac as the Metadata Controller. Huge no-no, will bog down both if too many users are accessing it. You need a second Mac Pro that is on the SAN, simple as that. No VPN needed.

    Just don't run a fileserver and FCServer on the same machine. It bogs way down.
