What's the best way to get an iPhone ready for its new owner?

I am taking over my wife's iPhone. What is the best way to rename the device and set it up with my appleID & itunes account?

Should I do a "restore" or is there something better?

Macbook 2.4, MacBook Pro 13.3" 2.26, Mac mini 2.2.6, iPhone 3Gs, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

How about just change the apple id info? I have logged in with my account but the previous user account keep pop out and ask me for password..
