Issues burning a CD

I'm having trouble burning CD's in iTunes for some reason. Before the update I was able to burn everything fine, but for some reason now iTunes doesn't seem to register when I have a blank disk in the drive. It will, however, recognize a music CD. Here's my diagnostics test

I'm the only account/user on my laptop so I should have full administrative rights. I just never set up multiple accounts since I'm the only user. Also the disks show up in the "Computer" section of my computer so the laptop recognizes there there is a disk in there, but for some reason that disk does not appear in iTunes

Yes, by default that one is usually an administrator. So the Diagnostics result suggests that something has gone wrong with permissions in that account related to iTunes.

Let's try an experiment.

Quit iTunes if you have it open.
In Computer, open Local Disk C:\ or whichever drive you have your program files installed on.
Open the "Program files" folder.
Open the "iTunes" folder.
Right click on the iTunes.exe file and select "Run as administrator".

While iTunes is running-as-an-administrator, run your diagnostics again. Do they now say "Current use is an administrator"?

If so, still while running-as-an-administrator, try another burn. Does it go through without the error this time?

It came back as "Current user is an administrator.", but for some reason it still did not find the CD in iTunes. I finally got it to burn by clicking "file" and then "burn playlist to disc but the disc still doesn't show up on the side, and when i right click the tracks it doesn't give me the option to burn them to a disc like it used to

Hmmm. Definitely time to start following up the non-appearance of the disc in the source list then. The following questions are related to one possibility with that.

What make and version of security software are you running on the PC? (Firewall, antivirus, antispyware?)

Prior to the current setup, has a different third party security package *ever been* installed on the PC (say, as a factory preload)? If so, what make did you have? (McAfee, Norton, Kaspersky, etc?)

There's no security currently running on this computer I don't think. It came with a trial of Norton installed but that was never activated.

Also the discs I burned do not work in a CD player. They only work on iTunes for some reason. After I burn a disc and put it into my CD player it claims nothing is there, but when I put into my laptop iTunes reads it as a "audio disc". It still does not see the CD when it is blank

Okay ... plausibly, that never completely uninstalled. And Norton is one of the packages I associate with (occasional) reports of interference leading to difficulties associated with disk recognition and writing.

So, let's try purging any "undead" Norton componentry from the system:

[Download and run the Norton Removal Tool to uninstall your Norton product|http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web view.jsp?wv_type=publicweb&docurl=20080710133834EN]

After running, reboot the PC. Does your iTunes behave more sensibly with regard to disks now?
