Can't add Canon MX870 using LPD on OS X 10.6.5

We've just got a new Canon MX870 printer in our office, and I'm trying to add it on my mac (running 10.6.5).

I've chosen LPD as the protocol, entered the printers IP address, and selected Canon MX870 series from the "Print Using" list. When I push the Add button, a windows drops down very briefly (less than a second) titled "Determining Installable Options". When it disapears, I'm left back at the Add Printer window, without the printer having been installed.

I've tried downloading and installing the latest drivers from the Canon website, but that did not help.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Yes, you are correct Pahu - you can communicate with the printer using either ethernet or wireless, but not both at the same time.

This shouldn't be a problem, since in this case we want to pass info to the printer solely via ethernet.

Is there really no simple way to add the printer manually using its IP address?

I expect this problem has more to do with Canon's drivers than with the OS.

As you have stated this problem is a limitation of the Canon driver. So the answer is yes you can add the printer via LPD but you cannot use the Canon driver. If you must use IP because Bonjour is blocked then you would need to look at using an alternate driver. There is the Gutenprint driver suite which is included with OS X but the MX870 is not listed as a supported model, even with the latest version of the suite. There is also the [PrintFab|http://www.printfab.net] driver suite which does list the MX870 as a supported model but costs 49 euro.

But if you are not adverse to using Bonjour then you can open the Print & Fax > Add Printer pane and select the Default view. If the Mac is on the same subnet as the MX870 the printer should appear in this view, first as a Bonjour Scanner and a few seconds later as 'canonijnetwork', which is the printer component.

To follow on the last approach: I'm also having trouble adding the Canon MX870 but at a different spot .

When I use Default/Bonjour connection, the printer "canonijnetwork" appears and I can select it. But the driver software does not appear via autoselect. Instead I get "generic postscript printer" option for printer driver. I've tried to install it multiple times with the latest driver download but can't find the resulting files. Any suggestions on how to diagnose?

If the MX870 is not found in the printer list then the driver installation may have failed. This can occur if you did a custom install of 10.6 and selected not to install any printer drivers.

The fix can be easy. If you download and install the [Canon Driver Update v2.4.1|http://support.apple.com/kb/DL899] from Apple, this can get past the limitation the Canon driver installer has and make the MX870 printer appear in the printer list.

Here's what I did to get it fully working. Install the software that came with the printer, when it can't find the printer on the network just cancel. Now that the software is all installed, let's get the printer added to the Mac.

Okay, so what you want to do is go into Device Settings>LAN Settings>Other Settings>Bonjour settings>Enable/disable Bonour> Click Enable

At this point you can also go into Service name and change the name of the printer.

Then reboot the printer.

Go into System Preferences>Print & Fax on your Mac, unlock it if it's locked, and click on the + to add a printer. Now you should be in Add Printer. Click on Default if your not already there, give it a few seconds to locate the printer and the scanner. Select the printer and click Add. Now, if you want the scanner added as well, go back in and click on the +, select the scanner and click Add.

Now, unless there's some other network issue your printer should be fully functional.
