Static appears for a few seconds before login screen appears

I have a new Mac mini (bought in May of 2010) and I've got it connected via DVI to a Samsung SyncMaster P2770. When I'm away from the computer and wish to log back in I often have to wait through a few seconds of static before I the login screen appears. Does anyone else have this issue? Should I switch to HDMI and would that resolve it do you think?
