Why i can't I see my itunes library in my apple tv 2nd generation?

Hello all,

I have tried everything I can to get my apple tv to connect to my iTunes library. Itunes is updated and running on a toshiba satellite with windows 7. The apple tv has been updated as well.

My iphone remote app connects to the apple tv, but only intermittenty connects to itunes on my PC.
All devices are on the same network
The windows firewall is turned off
Home sharing is turned on on all devices
McCaffee av software has been deleted.

I have played with he router settings and configuration and I am out of ideas. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
B

Nope, I haven't even gotten a sign that the devices are trying to load. It is a windows 7 machine and I assume this is the problem. No loading messages, my PC detected a new device, which I labeled and named, but it made no difference. I have tried so many different things that I am really confused now.

Does anyone see anything, or has anyone seen something I am missing. I tried deleting skype, network Magic, anything that people assumed may interfere. Do I need a new wireless router, someone had mentioned that older routers can be a problem on one of the thousand chats I have read.

Hey man, sorry to hear about your troubles. When you say "iTunes cant see the ATV" are you talking about th sidebar or the Airplay menu? The new ATV doesn't show up in the sidebar like the old one did; the only indication you'll see is the Airplay icon in the lower right, which will allow you to switch to the ATV as your external speakers/monitor.

FWIW, I'm on an all-Apple network with Macs and iOS devices and everything (except photo streaming) is working. I wonder if Windows and non-Apple routers are just not feeling the love?

No, I read that it does not appear in the in the side bar and I perhaps missed the airplay icon in iTunes. However, in the main menu of my apple tv under the "computers" heading, there are no playlists listed, despite The fact that home sharing has been turned on, on all devices. Same Apple ID... I am happy with the product i just need to figure out tge home sharing. Perhaps messing with The airplay button in itunes will kickstart this while issue. Its the only thing I haven't tried, short of buying a Mac. This will be my last resort.

If iTunes is running and you don't see the Airplay icon in the bottom right corner, then it's not seeing your ATV. Stupid question: you did turn Airplay "on" in the ATV menu, correct?

Do you have a friend who can bring over a Mac laptop? You can test that on your system real quick and see if that iTunes library shows up on your ATV. Then at least you'll know if it's a Mac vs. PC problem or still something with your network, like a router.

Stupid question #2: is 'Sharing' enabled in iTunes prefs? This is not the same as Home Sharing (Advanced Menu) but a separate button in Prefs that shares your library on your network.

I don't know if BOTH need to be turned on for your library to show up on the ATV; but they can be set independently from each other which is a bit confusing...

This looks like the well known issue with many people. Even I have the same issue. Rebooting the ATV2 fixes it for me. But, rebooting everytime to hookup the library doesnt sound like even a cool workaround. I was hoping Apple would do something about it with the latest firmware update. No luck!. I have a PC. Everytime ATV2 cannt connect to the home sharing/itunes library, I cannt even see it on my iPhone either. So I believe this problem has to do with ATV2 and not the firewall issues on my PC or the router. I can always connect to my PC itunes library from my iPhone.

I have a list of things to try, thanks to this forum, but unlike some of you I have yet to establish any connection at all. Restarting the atv to regain the connection makes sense for those cases, but not in mine. I will likely try a new wireless router, or an airport router if they are pc compatible.
