Log & Transfer problem using Panasonic HVX & P2 cards

I'm having repeated issues with clips failing to import through Log & Transfer. First the technical:

•I'm attempting to import footage shot on Panasonic HVX200 & HPX170 cameras using Panasonic E-series P2 cards.
•I'm importing using an HVX200 connected to my Mac Pro via Firewire.
•I'm using Final Cut Pro 7 on a Mac Pro running OS X 10.5.8
•I have 4 64GB P2 cards, each set of 2 contain one roughly 75 minute spanned clip in 1080i 60 DVCProHD format

Now for the problem:

I launch Final Cut and open the log and transfer window. With 2 of my P2 cards mounted I see my clip in the list on the left (as one clip with "(complete span)" by the file name) and am able to view it in the preview window. I know the clip isn't close to the 128GB capacity of my 2 cards as my first card filled up shortly before the end of my shoot and I have 165.9GB of available memory on my capture drive. I add the clip to the transfer queue and for 10-20 seconds it pretends like it is going to work then with no warnings or error messages it just stops. I can see the spinning progress wheel in the status column of the render queue but then it just stops spinning and when I click on it it changes to a stop sign shaped icon. If I hold mu cursor over the icon it simply says "no data" and that is the only explanation I'm getting as to why it will not import. I know the data is there I can preview it through the camera or in the log and transfer window. Anybody know what my problem may be?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.8), Final Cut Pro 7, Panasonic 64GB E-series P2 cards, HVX200

Not really what you are asking but, get one of the P2 readers (~$350) to directly copy the entire contents of the cards to your hard drive FIRST. Then import the files after archiving the P2 files.

I use an old G4 Ti PowerBook which has a PCMCIA slot to use as my card reader. After inserting the card, I'll copy the entire contents of the card to my server using a unique name for the folder (Project number/date/card recorded that day). Once on the server, the edit machines can Log and Transfer over the network and I can back it up to removable hard drives.

Good luck,

x

Thanks for the input however I have been using my current workflow for the past 3 and a half years and I've never lost data. I have a macbook with a P2 slot that I got specifically for the workflow you suggest but when I've used that workflow I had problems and lost data. I get that in theory it is best to back-up data, but when I back it up then Final Cut won't recognize my back-up and I've already formatted my cards for the next project, that's when I'm really in trouble and it's happened every time I've tried to back-up first. After the first time it happened I started saving my cards until the data was in Final Cut, after the 3rd time it happened I abandoned that workflow for one that in my experience works. I have a colleague who uses that workflow, he taught it to me and I went back to him when I had problems and even he couldn't determine why FC wouldn't recognize the data. I get that you think it is better but it hasn't worked for me and I've lost data because of it. On top of that, this is the last project on which I will be working with P2 for a while so I'm not interested in adopting a new system, just getting past my current problem.

HOW are you backing up? The best way is to make a folder with a unique REEL name, and back up the full card contents into that folder. Then FCP will know where to find the footage, and assign that unique name. If you import first, THEN backup the card, all of your REEL numbers are NO NAME. FCP not recognizing your backup? Then you are doing something wrong.

But, if what you do works for you, then use it. Odd that the main way of doing things doesn't work for you.
