Buying an ipod touch international

Hi everyone,

I'm traveling in Europe and I am about to purchase a new ipod touch 4g. I am a resident of the USA and I'm wondering if I buy an ipod touch here (France) will I be able to purchase the extended applecare protection plan at a later date in the USA.

In summary, will there be a problem getting an extended warranty for an ipod from France in the USA?

Thanks,

-Nila

Hi and welcome to Apple Discussions,

You can purchase the iPod touch and the AppleCare Protection Plan in separate countries. The warranties for each item change depending the country you were in when you purchased the it.

You can find more information on the Apple legal site. You can also contact Apple directly by phone to verify before purchasing.

Hhhmmm, not sure about that, I don't think you can purchase the extended warranty at a later date. But - there are a couple of things you need to know about buying an iPod in France.

All iPods sold in France (or anywhere within the European Union - the EU) have a volume restriction on them which means they are quieter than iPods purchased elsewhere. (I don't think the USA has yet gone down this road.) And despite what anyone may tell you, you cannot get round that volume restriction. So when you get back home and compare your iPod with your friends, who own iPods bought in the USA, you'll be complaining (probably on this forum) about it.

Also, be aware that if you create an iTunes account in France, and purchase songs etc. in France, I believe you will have problems when you try using the account in the USA. This is because you cannot register your account for more than one country, nor can you simply change countries.

Plus, presumably, you have a laptop with you. If not, and you intend Syncing your iPod with a different computer when you get home, you'll lose all the content already on the iPod because you cannot Sync an iPod with two computers.

At least in the USA, you can purchase the extended AppleCare coverage as long as you are still covered by the original one-year warranty. Specifically this page says:

Important notes

The AppleCare Protection Plan can be purchased only while your iPod or Apple TV is still covered under the standard one-year limited warranty. See AppleCare Protection Plan Terms and Conditions for complete product details.
