Airport Express v7.5.2 firmware won't accept manual IP address

I have three identical Airport Express A1264 'N' that were all running firmware v7.4.2. I was just prompted to update to the new firmware v7.5.2.

They are all configured to "Join a wireless network" and everything on the network is has a static IP - there are no DHCP servers configured.

After first updating Airport Utility to v5.5.2, I uploaded the new 7.5.2 firmware to update them. All three changed the existing static IP to an IP address outside of my network, 169.254.68.x. ALL other configured settings were preserved except for the manual IP address. I manually re-entered the proper static IP addresses again, but upon Update they again reverted to the IP address noted above, which looks suspiciously like numbers that would come from a DHCP.

They of course didn't work, so I uploaded the previous v7.4.2 firmware which accepts and saves my manually configured IP addresses and works fine.

Anyone else experience this?

Doesn't look like I had the same problem but...

I was having a **** of a time updating the firmware on my express to 7.5.2. Kept getting an error of express not getting a valid connection error code 6721. Problem wass that I was updating Airport Utility and the Express, or maybe it was just one update. I had tried disabling my firwall, along with adaware and avast just to make sure nothing was getting block, bascially as a last resort. I found your page which made me wonder if it was a router issue. So I started from the ground up and reset eveything (from start to finish, internet modem, router, airport express, no computer reboot)and only left the router and the airport express, along with the computer connected nothing else. I know you have 3 and I'm only working with one, but I've got to say thanks because it fixed my problem as I have and have always had my Airport Express using a static IP. It could have just reset some connections to help link the router with the airport express thus allowing me to finally fully connect to it with my computer. The funny thing is that Airport Utility was always green lighted with the Airport Express even though it said I didn't have a valid connection.

So sorry for the lenghthy explaintion but I have to say thanks, an just wanted to let you know that though not the same problem this may work for you. Worth a shot...Maybe try updating to 7.5.2. Reset your router, than try to plug in your addresses, reset the router again and see what you get..hopefully it sticks for ya.

I tried updating the AE to v7.5.2, then rebooted the router, then manually configured the IP address, but it still reverted to 169.254.x.x (which is what most devices default to when expecting a DHCP address, but can't find a DHCP server).

I then reset the AE to factory defaults and reconfigured ALL settings. After updating firmware to v7.5.2, it again reverted to 169.254.x.x. Once again I uploaded the previous 7.4.2 firmware and the correct manually entered IP address appeared. So they are still not upgraded to the latest firmware.

Hmmm. Still not sure what's going on. There are no connections to the AE Ethernet ports (when trying to update wirelessly). I have also tried wiring the Ethernet port directly to the router for updating with no luck either.

Any manually entered IP address becomes 169.254.x.x after Update. I have even tried using a different never-used IP address in case a route table somewhere thought the address was in use.

The strange thing is, upon reverting to the previous 7.4.2 firmware, the address I had tried to manually enter appears, and all is well in AE land.

I am having the identical problem with my AE. No matter what I try the v7.5.2 firmware will not retain a manually configured IP address. After the restart you end up with what looks like a "self configured" IP address. The problem isn't just with the displayed address in the AirPort Utility. The AE also doesn't reply to pings or allow it's configuration to be read.

The only workaround I have found is to revert to the V7.4.2 firmware, which works as expected.

Okay, sorry to hear you're also having the exact same problem but at least now I know it's not totally unique to my setup, yet there are others not having trouble with the firmware upgrade.

I'm not new to networking, having been an IT administrator for many years. But I see nothing amiss with my methodology, this is not the first time that I have updated the Airport Express firmware, and the fact remains that the previous firmware is not problematic.

It wouldn't be the first time that small hardware changes within a production run can have different behaviours with firmware, and perhaps this is affecting a certain serial number range that encompasses a minor hardware modification.

you are not alone. Same here with two Airport Express. It only occurs when set to "Join an existing network" and IP is set manually. When you set it to "Create a network", or if you use DHCP, it works fine.

Clearly a bug, I submitted it on the Airport Express feedback page.

Btw the 169. IP address range is used for self assigned IPs, that means if a device doesn't have an IP assigned manually or by DHCP, it will assign itself one of these IPs.

Had the same issue - updated firmware lead to out of range IP address, and the AX would not accept my fixed IP address.

Kept the updated firmware, but set the AX to use DHCP and the issue has been solved for now.

Clearly a bug - I'll revert to fixed IP when a new (and corrected) firmware is released - but at least I can stream my music again for now...
