Cannot Connect to iTunes Store

Every time I try to connect to the iTunes store I get a message that says:

iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. The network connection timed out.
Make sure network settings are correct and your network connection is active, then try again.

The network settings are no different than last time I successfully connected to iTunes Store, and the connection is obviously active or else I wouldn't be typing this. I am using version 9.2.1.5, so my version is relatively up-to-date. What can I do to fix this?

Some kind of emachines computer..., Windows XP

I just ran across this same problem on all my Apple devices. I didn't notice until tonight when my AppleTV wanted to do a software update - so I did it. Now my iTunes menu option is gone as well as my Netflix option. The network test in my AppleTV says it can't contact Apple and to check network settings.

Youtube works fine (on the AppleTV), as does the internet radio, Mobile Me, and Flickr. So the network is fine, it's just iTunes that is down I guess.

I have an iPhone 3GS, an iPhone 4, and an iPad all on this same network and while they can do everything on the internet they please, none can connect to the itunes store.

My desktop PC also cannot connect to the iTunes store. iTunes did tell me there was an update, and for kicks I did that with no issues (updated to 10.1.1) - but the iTunes store is still not available on it either.

So either something is going on with the iTunes store, or something is going on with my network or ISP that ONLY affects iTunes connections.

I'm pretty sure this isn't an iTunes version thing. There seems to be something going on with access to the store itself. (Since my computer is only one of the devices that can't connect - all my iPhones and my iPad also cannot connect) so iTunes 10 I don't think is the problem. I think it's just coincidence that you upgraded and then saw the problem.

Just like I think it's coincidence that I upgraded my AppleTV and that's when I saw the problem. I reverted the AppleTV back to factory defaults and that didn't fix the problem, so it doesn't see this problem is related to updates. At least not on our client sides.

Recently, I began having issues downloading with iTunes. I am able to download small podcasts but cannot download apps, upgrades to my iphone, ipad, or iTunes itself. The downloading starts but always times out! If I take my computer to my son's home and connect to his wifi then the downloading works. We have identical routers. This indicates to me there is an issue with my service provider Roadrunner. However, they cannot identify my problem. Help!! There must be a settings I am unaware of. Apple store people tell me to buy an Apple router.

My problems have passed. I did a few things last night to troubleshoot things and think my issue was either with my provider or just some cache on the network. Here is what I did.

On my iPhone 4, I could not connect to the app store. So I powered off the phone, reboot, and tried again, no go. The app store worked fine earlier in the day at my office so I turned off my wifi on the phone and let it try via 3G. Success! After I logged into the App store I immediately switched back to wifi and it kept working for several more app udates. But that told me that it was either my own network or my ISP and it was just the initial connection that was broken. So I powered off all of my equipment at the house (router, AP, etc...) and when they came back up, all my devices can connect to the app store and my AppleTV is working again just fine.

In my case, I think Apple may have changed some IPs and my equipment still had some cached DNS records that only clear after some time passes or a reboot of the router. My router and network equipment is rock solid so it hasn't been rebooted in over a year. The issue would have passed eventually, but a reboot forced it to flush now and I'm golden at home again.

Apple may have had a glitch recently that caused all of our issues, but things seem to be stable now. I would suggest that everyone make sure their DNS cache is clear on all their devices.

For routers that usually just means rebooting them.

For computers you can run an "ipconfig /flushdns" (Windows) command or the Mac equivalent - or just reboot as well.

For devices (like iPhones/iPods) a reboot should be good.

You should start with routers/firewalls/Wireless APs and then move to your computers and devices. After everything is rebooted and/or flushed, try each device to see if your connection to iTunes is restored.
