In iTunes v.10.1.1 (4) if I change the Media folder location in Preferences/Advanced from the current location: /Users/myname/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music will I be causing any problems?

this will only tell iTunes where to put newly added content.
Not certain I fully understand. Is it the length of time it takes for iTunes to access Users/myname/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music that is of concern or is it simply that you need to access the file for something else and do not want to drill down to it everytime?
I have a similar question for Windows. I have all my music on an external disk, but for some reason Itunes 10.x has changed the location of all my music to
file://localhost/C:/Documents and Settings/My Music/iTunes/Itunes Music/Music
Rather than going into 1700 songs and resetting their directory, how can I tell iTunes to look at I:/Music where all the media is located?
To quickly access a file or folder (any kind), there are several things you can do. These are all from the Finder, iTunes is not involved.
(1) you can create an alias from wherever, your desktop or anything. To do so, go to Finder, select the folder and drag it to where you want to put the alias, while pressing Command + Option. You should see an arrow on the folder icon.
(2) you can put the folder in the Dock for quick access. It's easy: Just drag the folder to the right part of the Dock (don't put it in the Trash!). To remove it, drag it off the Dock.
(3) you can put it in the sidebar of your Finder windows. Drag the folder to the left of the same window (assuming it has a sidebar on the left, if not click the "white pill" button on the top right of the same window). A + sign will appear. To remove, drag off the sidebar.
(4) you can add it to the Toolbar. This time, instead of dragging to the left, you drag it to the top of the same window (just below the bar containing window name and "pill buttons"). The same + sign will appear. To remove, hit Command and drag off the Toolbar.
If you want to use these methods, just make sure you don't move the actual folder, or iTunes might be lost...
I have had to learn this over years of using and Integrating my Music Library onto a NAS. I now have 200GB of material.

how can I tell i Tunes to look at I:/Music where all the media is located?
Under Preferences:
Go to the ADVANCED Tab
You will see: iTunes Media Folder Location
Click : CHANGE
Now direct itunes to the One Folder you have all your Music in. (I created a Folder Called MASTER MP3 LIBRARY, all artists folders,etc were located in that).
Click OK
*Now , you need to go to FILE
go down to ADD FOLDER TO LIBRARY
go to the same Folder you told i tunes to store Media in and click OK
...Pending on the size of your library, this process of Importing can take A LONG TIME. First it scans all your songs, then it starts to process Album Artwork, and it starts its laborious task of Determining Gapless Playback Information, and THIS is the thing that can take a Day or more.
BUT....if you just leave it alone, once it has scanned all your library, you are set. I have done this numerous times,but the key is, Be Patient.
