Move to original recording position

Imported 7 tracks from a live 1,5h recording of a concert. This was recorded using Tracktion using 8 mics into eight tracks. I've tried to get into Logic before and gave up. More than once... Since I've decided to once again try to become a friend of Logic for recording, mixing and editing acoustic music I have decided to do the audio editing/mixing in Logic. Import went well. I began to remove unused parts from various tracks and accidentally moved a region along the timeline. No problem - "Move to original recording position", but this command has no effect. Nothing happens. All files are BWAV files 1,5h long. I expect the region I ask to "Move to original recording position" to do just that. What's wrong?

"Move To Original Record Position" can only be relevant when the audio file was ORIGINALLY recorded in a Logic session. Think about it... the Logic timeline has absolutely nothing to do with Lives timeline.

If the audio files you imported all started from the exact same point (which I suspect they did, in order for you to have them play in sync, once in Logic), just make a cut on this tracks audio region near the very beginning, and drag it back out all the way to the right (assuming you didn't accidentally move the very beginning of the audio region).

One bit of advice... lock the smpte position of the regions right now. This way, as you learn your way around Logic, the audio regions will not move left or right on the time line.

Broadcast wave files should indeed move to their correct position if everything is set up correctly.

I have to do this with imported files I get from the University, it has worked in both Cubase and Logic.

First, check and see if a SMPTE offset used in Traction, if so write it down.

Next, take a look at Logic's SMPTE offset, it defaults to one hour, you will need to change this to 00.00.00.00.00. (providing there's no SMPTE offset used in Traktion)

Select the region then select Move to original position.

See if that helps.

Also, you can tell if there is a timestamp (or at least if Logic is seeing it) by looking in the audio bin, if there is a little clock icon then there is a timestamp - if no clock, then Logic is not recognizing the timestamp. I think the manual says you have to open the audio bin window to see this, but maybe it's outdated because I can see the clock in the audio bin tab/pane.

If all those files aren't timestamped you can select the regions and 'convert regions to new audio files' and they will have Logic's stamp. Just for future reference.

Thanks! The timecode = 00:00:00:00 according to BWAVreader. It seems that Logic ignores this particular timecode and accepts anything other than 00:00:00:00. If I import files recorded at the beginning of the Tracktion timeline (00:00:00:00) then Logic ignores the clock. No clock icon in the bin. If I import with a timecode anything other than 00:00:00:00 the timecode is accepted and the clock icon is shown in the bin. AFAIK 00:00:00:00 is a valid timecode.

Ok, and.....?
So if files don't show a timestamp/clock icon you know they go at 00:00:00:00.
Either way you should be ok now, correct?

Just make sure when you import the files that Logic is not set at it's DEFAULT one hour SMPTE offset.

No, I've trimmed the regions. They no longer start at 00, they are no longer of equal length. I've slpit regions during pauses throughout the recording and the accidentally moved regions where more than 45 min into the recording. So I'd need to set the start of each region relative to its original position in the recording = the original region.

You understand that regions are really only pointers to the original wave file. If you chop a region into pieces and move the new regions around you are only editing a set of instructions on how to play the wave file... unless you choose to make the regions actual wave files.

The main purpose of BWAV files to place the imported waves at the correct start time, regions are a completely different animal.

If you accidentally move a region, immediately use UNDO and the region will move back.

Yes. In my case I started with one single region that maps the whole BWAV file. I then split the region in at least two regions. Both referring to the same file. Different sections in the same file. I then (unintentionally) moved the second region causing this region to go out of sync with the other tracks. After some editing I detected this problem. I expected that I could just ask the region to reset its position to where it started, where it should be, where this section of the initial region was before I started splitting it.

If you accidentally move a region, immediately use UNDO and the region will move back.

That only works until your next operation. If you detect the problem some time later you need another solution.
