How do I properly setup an Extreme (802.11 n) + Express wired Network

Hello,

I have been trying to make my setup work properly for weeks now with little success. I have spoken to multiple IT professionals as well as apple care to get this working properly but to no avail. Here's my goal, I would like to have an airport network that reaches both my office upstairs and my wifes office downstairs. I would like to be able to share internet, files, and print throughout the network.

We have:
1 new Airport Extreme (802.11n)
2 new Airport Express
1 ATT micro Cell
2 Belkin 1000mbs AC power adapters
1 MacMini
1 iMac
1 Mac Book Pro
2 iPhones (1 3Gs, 1 4g)

The current and best working setup is as follows:

The cable modem in my office is connected to the Airport Extreme. I have the Belkin AC adapter connected in my office to one of the Airport Extreme's Ethernet connectors then directly to the closest wall outlet. Downstairs I have the other Belkin AC adapter connected directly to the closest wall outlet to our ATT Micro Cell. (Micro Cell must be near a window for GPS service). All the lights on the Belkin are blue which says that it is communicating at least over 100mbs.
The Belkin is connected to the Micro Cell via Ethernet and the Micro Cell works just fine. (unless ATTs server goes down and then it losses connection but thats another discussion).
I then have an Airport Express connected to the "Computer" Ethernet jack on the back of the Micro Cell. This is supposed to pass the network connection through the Micro Cell to a router. This downstairs Airport Express is setup in Bridge mode and should be working with the Extreme upstairs to provide DHCP. I have a separate WiFi network for the downstairs network. The two airports are also setup on different channels.
The other Airport Express is connected to my Slingbox and is only being used as an adapter. (it seems to work fine).

The problem:
Both networks broadcasts without a problem and I am able to connect all of my devices to either network. The problem occurs when I switch from one Airport to the other with my iPhone or with my Mac Book Pro. The device will connect to the network but when it connects back to the downstairs network it does not receive an IP address. I literally have to shutdown and restart the entire network to get it to assign another IP via DHCP.

I have been on the phone for hours with apple care and some IT professionals but with little success. The apple care people told me to "extend the network" but when I do that the Airport Express never works and the network is completely lost. I think this is because I am trying to use a wired connection and not a wireless one (I thought of using a crossover cable but havent tried that yet). I have swithced to every channel I can think of. I have tried running the express to assign a limited range of addresses but it gives me the error that I have two DHCP servers on the network and will not provide an internet connection. I have also reset everything about 20 times. I'm sure I have done other things to get this to work but I cant remember them all. Also I just recently updated everything to the latest firmware but that has only made it so I cant print over the network (bummer for another discussion).

Any suggestions? Sorry for the long description.

THANKS!

Can you clarify if you can set up a "roaming" network with all Apple AirPorts using the same wireless network name, security and password? Then devices will be able to "roam" from one area to another without having to change networks. The computer or iPhone will pick up the wireless signal from the strongest wireless access point, which will usually be the device that is closest at the time.

Rather than trying to use the AT&T device as a "pass through", which I suspect is causing some issues, you need to install a simple 5 port ethernet switch at the end of the ethernet cable from the AirPort Extreme, then run a short ethernet cable from the switch to the AT&T device and another short ethernet cable to the AirPort Express.

Post back if you need more details. I have an AirPort Extreme connected to two other Airports by ethernet in a "roaming" network and it has performed flawlessly for years.

Originally I had set it up with the same network name, password etc. The only difference was the channels on the two routers. I had the same problem. When I went from one office to the other I would loose my IP address. One of my IT friends told me to try changing the name of one of the networks to more easily diagnose which airport was the problem so I did. I'll go and buy a switch. Hopefully that will sort it out. Thanks!

Set both Expresses up to "Create a wireless network". The "extend" setting is used only if you are connecting using wireless only. You are connecting using ethernet.

You'll need to make sure that you have both of the AirPort Express devices in "bridge mode" as a final check when you configure them, whether you choose to have the same wireless network name for both or different names.

AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
Internet icon
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)

Okay, I have installed a switch into the chain. I am now connecting the switch to the Belkin AC power Ethernet adapter and have the Express and the Micro Cell connected to it. Everything is working properly except I still am having the same problem.
I just took my iPhone upstairs and connected to the network fine. I then took it back downstairs and connected to the other WiFi network and I am still not getting an IP address.
The Express is set to bridge mode. (I told the apple care specialist on the phone the "extend" function was only for wireless but he argued with me that it would work wired also, I thought he was wrong). My other express is also set to bridge but it is only acting as an adapter for my SlingBox.

Within reason, I have almost the same setup. My AirPort Extreme supplies an ethernet feed to an ethernet switch, which in turn is hooked up to a DVR, DVD and an AirPort Express providing additional wireless coverage in a "roaming" configuration. I have another ethernet feed to the kitchen area which connects directly to an AirPort Express there.

All devices are configured with the same wireless network name, security and password. The Express devices are configured as "bridges". If I walk my iPhone from the kitchen to the den and then to my office, it will pick up the wireless from the den, where the DVR, DVD equipment is, then as I enter my office, it will pick up the signal from the AirPort Extreme.

Not sure what else to say. Maybe try "forget this network" on the iPhone and then reconfigure it. Can you duplicate the same problem that the iPhone has with a laptop?

Hey Bob,
Thanks for all the advice. Ive tried forgetting and reconfiguring the network on all my devices multiple times now. I have tried this with my laptop also and get the same problem. No DHCP address when connecting to the Express downstairs. I've been using my iPhone primarily because its just a bit more portable. Ive even got it so the Express is connected directly to the Extreme without the Micro Cell connected at all... Still not working! I am on the phone with apple care now. Hopefully the will be able to replace my Extreme or something. This is getting very discouraging. Ill be sure to post my results after I get off the phone with apple. Thanks again for your help.

I just got off the phone with apple care. After about 30 min they transferred me to Tier 2. We spent about 2 hours reconfiguring everything and trying every possible setup. It basically came down to the Extreme not giving an IP address to the Express. We tried both of my Expresses and had the same problem. When everything was in its default state the Extreme should assign an IP address to the Express when it is plugged in with an Ethernet cable. No matter what we did the Extreme would never assign the express an address although it would assign one to my laptop without a problem. After trying everything we could think of the Apple care agent authorized a replacement. It is being sent out today and should be here in a few days (if the holidays don't slow things down). I will post my results when the new Extreme shows up. Thanks again Bob for your help and thank you Ken (apple care) for your help as well.
