Why are video MMS messages blurry?

Just had a quick question, why are MMS video messages from iphone to iphone blurry?

When I receive or send MMS video messages they come across blurry at both ends, however if you view the video on the device that created it, its crystal clear.

Are video MMS messages intenionally reduced quality?

There is an overall message size limit for one thing which is very small. SMS/MMS started out as very limited email access between cell phones before there were any smart phones. Still a poor man's form of email with a cell phone which remains limited but has been and is a cash cow and a very high profit center for cellular carriers.
