iTunes does not "see" my iPad - Help!!

Dear Whoever is reading this,
I'm desperate for help. My iPad isn't being 'seen' by iTunes. I run itunes 10.1.1 on Windows XP, and it doesn't seem to be finding my iPad. I am desperate, seriously. I have tried EVERYTHING. Or at least everything my Dad and I could think of. Any suggestions? Please help me, Please. Thank you,

Dear Whoever is reading this,
Thank you for your help, Carolyn. I'll view the forum, and we've already turned to the user guide for guidance (I have the 4.2 user guide in iBooks.) I need this to work. I don't know how I'll get by without my iPad if it doesn't work. Again, please help me out here. I've just turned 13 and this was my birthday present. (yes, I'm using my dads iTunes account) It is my birthday and Christmas present combines, since it's si expensive. Thank you.

This will almost certainly be resolved by reinstalling the Apple mobile device drivers.
Unfortunately, it's been a few years since I used XP, but certainly in Vista and 7 you just go to Devices, right-click on the Apple Mobile Device and select troubleshooting. That will do a bit of thinking and reinstall the Apple drivers.
That has always worked for me.
Alternatively, go to Device Manager and uninstall the Apple Mobile Device drivers, then reinstall which should happen automatically when you next plugin your iPad.
As I said, I'm not sure about XP any more, but you should be able to work it out.
