These ones are typically caused by underlying problems on the PC that also often cause Windows Updates to fail to install. If we can fix the Windows Update trouble, we can usually get the iTunes trouble cleaned up en passant.

Go into your Windows update and try to check for new updates. Do they fail to install? If so, go into your Update History and doubleclick the failures. What alphanumeric codes appear for you? Are they also 80073712s, or a different error code? If they're different, what codes are you getting in Windows Update?

🙂 perfect info, thanks alex.

Net Framework 3.5 service pack 1 Family Update (KB951847)x86

We'll concentrate on that one first. (Not having it on board can cause iTunes to fail to run, too.)

Does the following document allow you to get the update installed?

[When you try to install an update for the .NET Framework 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, or 3.5, you may receive Windows Update error code "0x643" or Windows Installer error code "1603"|http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100]

Interesting ... that one is incorporated as a component into your Vista.

So if we take the message at face value, an sfc /scannow might get the 2.0 .NET framework back for us:

Does the scannow repair/replace any files? If so, will the 3.5 install work for you?

Good lord. Okay, if we're lucky, that might have just been caused by your Windows Modules Installer Service having been stopped. (That can cause trouble with installing updates, too ...)

In your Start Menu, right-click Computer and select "Manage".
Expand "Services & Applications".
Open "Services". (Maximise the window to better see what's going on.)
Find the Windows Modules Installer Service, select it and click either "Start" or "Restart".

Does it start or restart? If so, can you get an sfc to go through now?
