"Microphone Enabled" gray-not working in chats but working everywhere else?

I literally JUST software updated my computer. I haven't changed any settings. Today is the first time I have used iChat in a few days and the first time this has happened. In video and audio chats my mic is not working. It is recognized by iChat and it is turned on correctly in settings. The weird thing is that under the "Video" section of the menu bar, "Microphone Enabled" is checked outside of chats, then as soon as I start a chat, that option goes gray and un-clickable. Why would it do that?

Macbook Pro 15, Mac OS X (10.6.5)

Hi,

You mention changing to the Internal Mic. This suggests an external Mic.

When changing to the Internal Mic you did remember to adjust the volume in System Preferences > Sound > Input ?

Try this:-
Go to your Home Folder (The Little House Icon in the Finder's Side Bar) then Library/Preferences
Drag the file com.apple.ichat.plist to the trash and then restart iChat.

Double check/Reset System Preferences > Sound > Input and iChat's Mic Selection.
Set System Preferences > Sound first.

I had this problem for the longest time. My solution was go to the video menu options at the top bar and click for the drop down menu. If at the bottom the "microphone enabled" option is greyed out and not able to be clicked, first unclick the "camera enabled" option THEN you should be able to click microphone enabled and reclick camera enabled. Hope this helps.

Hi,

Welcome to the  Discussions

I must admit to have not checked that on my MacBook Pro running 10.6.5

I would somewhat expect it though, as there is a separate Method for Muting the Sound/Mic during an Audio only or Video Chat.

I would start with System Preferences > Sound > Input tab
Make sure this lists and has selected the Mic you wnat ICHat to use.
Adjust the Volume slider towards the right so the Blue Reponse bar (when you talk) gets over halfway (Preferably about 3/4s) and does not bang in to the Right hand end.

Double check in the iChat > Preferences > Audio/Video Pane that the Same Mic is selected in the Drop down.

Hi,

Welcome to the  Discussions

If his particular Mac only has one Input choice in System Preferences > Sound > Input tab then iChat will not show the Drop down.
Both my G4 and MacBook Pro can do Line-in as well as anything I plug in (to the G4)
The MacBook Pro has the Internal mic.

What he may need to do, in the System Preferences spot listed above, to slide the volume to the right (higher).
It should not crash in to the right hand end as the OS will "Protect" him form Feedback and "Clip" the audio. It needs to be above halfway, 3/4s is ideal.
