Does iTunes have to be open for Home Sharing?

I finally figured out how to get everything connected and working. It seems, though, that after the last upgrade, I think, iTunes must be open for Home Sharing to work. Is this right? Is there a way around that? Also, is there a way to allow the system to sleep to save power, and awake when I want to access my library? The computer and ATV2 are far enough away that going to the computer is inconvenient. Thoughts?

I could swear that iTunes did not need to be open on the host computer to access the library through ATV before the last software update. I could be mistaken, I suppose, but I also could find no reference to iTunes being open in the set up or troubleshooting sections of ATV support. Can anyone refer me to that?

yes you are mistaken.

itunes has always required to be open to stream content. if you had synced content then you could close itunes.

That KB article doesn't actually say specifically that iTune must be running on the computer. It only says that the computer must be using iTunes (latest version) and that Home Sharing needs to be setup.

As there is usually an iTunes Helper Application in the Login Items of the user it isn't clear that iTunes needs to be running from Apple's documentation.

I have just set this up with a new Apple TV and asked myself the same question.
