Importing video for use in FCP

I have never really ran into this problem before so I figured I would see if anyone else has.

A client brought in a DVD produced by someone else of his grandson playing football. I am supposed to go in and Identify his grandson before the snaps. This is all fine.

I am having a problem importing the DVD. I generally use Mpeg Streamclip, but for some reason when I drag the DVD into mpeg streamclip, the video becomes severely distorted and is unusable. Supposedly this footage was originally shot in avchd footage.

Is there something special I need to do to Mpeg streamclip? Or is there another way I should import this video? I guess if I have to I could just capture the DVD using my MOTU V3HD i/o, but if there is a simpler way I'd appreciate the info.

Thanks in advance.
