Guest iPhones - how to Airplay

All they need is to be connected to the same network as your Apple TV.

I have tested this with all three of my kids when they come visit me. Their iPhone connects to my wireless network and they can send content to my Apple TV.

I just remember when my son got his iPhone last month we tried it and it just worked.

They need to have updated to the latest version of iOS on their phones, have they done that?

Also, airplay is not a feature for the iPhone 3G, so if they're using that one, they cannot run Airplay.

Also, they need to hook up to your normal Wifi network and not to the guest network.
The guest network will protect your own services and devices from your guest devices, but in consequence also deny any access to utilize Airplay.

They need to connect to your standard/internal WiFi

but the must be on the right network if they are able to use the remote app to control the appleTV.. that means they must be on the same network as the appleTV..

The Airplay app will not stream from iOS device apps like pandora (see later about browsers)........ If the content is actually ON the friends iPhone Airplay will do it. If it is playing from a streaming app (Pandora, et.c) then it is not streamable. You would then have a router instead of an iPhone as it would just be streaming (echoing) a stream.

However, (using the iPhone connection kit from Apple) if you hardwire the phone to your TV or amp (not the ATV2) the music, but not the video of apps will stream. If you access Pandora via a browser then both video and sound will stream via hardwired connection to the TV/amp from any iOS device. I do this at school where I teach........works fine.

Sooooo............. this is not a network issue, but a software issue.. see work arounds above.

Yes guests can stream from Pandora and other iOS apps using Airplay. They just need to be on the same network as the ATV like everyone else said. And this also works if they are on the guest network as long as you connect the ATV to the guest network as well.

As per the icon not showing up when your playing ipod songs on your iphone, I've had the issue with losing the airplay icon on my iphone when I leave my network. (ie. leave the house) and then return. Even though I reconnect automatically to the network when I return it doesn't provide me with the airplay icon. In those cases, I have to turn off my iphone and then reboot it. The icon will then appear. So have your guests attempt that.
