HELP!! Apple Application Error 2

I have been trying to install iTunes and keep coming up with the same errors. The first one happens during publishing product information. It says "An error occurred during the installation of assembly "policy.8.0.Microsoft.VC80.CRT,version="8.0.50727.4053",type="win32-policy",pub licKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e183b",processorArchitecture="x86". I click "ok" (because that's the only option I have). It rolls back the action and then continues with the install. Then comes up with "Service "Apple Mobile Device failed to start." I hit ignore. I did "retry" and that brought me back to the same place. It continues with Download then says that iTunes was successfully installed on my computer. Then the error "Apple Application Support was not found. Apple Application Support is required to run iTunes. Please uninstall iTunes, then install iTunes again. Error 2 (Windows Error 2)".

Can someone help me? I have tried this countless times and keep getting the same errors. I have disabled all firewalls, antivirus, disconnected from internet and still nothing is working.

At this rate, it will be a Christmas miracle if this can be fixed!!

An error occurred during the installation of assembly "policy.8.0.Microsoft.VC80.CRT,version="8.0.50727.4053",type="win32-policy",pub licKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e183b",processorArchitecture="x86".

What alphanumeric HRESULT code are you seeing at the end of that message, please, Cait? (For example: "HRESULT: 0x8007000b".)

Drat ... sometimes the HRESULT stuff extends out beyond the bounds of the error message box and can't be seen. So we'll have to try to work out what flavor of this you're getting by other means.

These ones are typically caused by underlying problems on the PC that also often cause Windows Updates to fail to install. If we can fix the Windows Update trouble, we can usually get the iTunes trouble cleaned up en passant.

Go into your Windows update and try to check for new updates. Do they fail to install? If so, go into your Update History and doubleclick the failures. What alphanumeric codes appear for you? (For example, "8007000b".)

I have been having this problem for over a month now. When I had first looked on these forums you had mentioned to someone to check their updates and see if they were failing. They were, and I spent a good 6 hours with Microsoft Support while they went into my registry and moved things around..... finally, the updates install successfully every time. However, my computer comes up with the same 2 updates constantly. It's like it's never completely updated, even though it says all updates were successful. I then check for more and like I said before, the same two pop up. Do you have any knowledge on this? Is this the underlying issue??

Sorry about the delay, Cait. (I missed the email notification for your reply.)

KB937287

... Odd. That's an update to the Vista Installer system. (It's supposed to be a prerequisite for your Service pack 1 for Vista.)

Let's have a go at that one first. Rather than using Windows Update, let's try getting that via the KB937287 installer download available in the following Microsoft article:

[A software update is available for the Windows Vista installation software feature|http://support.microsoft.com/kb/937287]

Does that update seem to go through okay? If so, restart the PC and check for updates again. Are you still getting offered the KB937287?

If not, see if KB979683 will "stay installed" if you update with it now.

If those two go through, check again for any other updates that might have become available, and stock up. Then try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

Hmmmm.

Can you check something for me, Cait? (You may have already done this once with Microsoft.)

Try running an sfc /scannow as per the following document:

[How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7|http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833]

Does the scannow go through properly, or do you get an error message? if you get an error message, what does it say?

If the scannow does go through properly, does it repair any files? Or were there no integrity violations?

microsoft had me rename the software distribution folder. that didn't work either. and now my computer is consistently failing 2 updates. error codes 643 and 490. Microsoft.NET framework 3.5 service pack 1 and and .NET Framework 3.5 Family update (KB951847)x86 is one. the next one id Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB973688)
