Jan 3, 2011 9:11 PM in response to blewis_13by mountainshots,I fell your pain. I just used Import and Aperture did not exclude ANY of the previously imported photos. Very frustrating. I wonder sometimes if I am a fan-boy for sticking with this software. Seems to me that Apple is getting close on a good package but MAN this is frustrating. Good luck! -
Jan 16, 2011 1:51 AM in response to mountainshotsby ilovebillgates,I feel the same. i have used aperture for about four years, i have several library / vaults running to some 10 tb of disk space. my working library is just over 1 tb on a 2tb disk, i use three cameras that name files dsd , dse & dsf** . the cameras have the same time and date on . As i face a new year and another 80000 pictures i wonder what my options are, I've wasted days going from aperture2 to aperture 3 (4-1/2 solid days no production or pay). this duplication issue at busy times in the studio is giving me a problem.
time to consider an alternative, if it can import aperture libraries -
Feb 20, 2011 3:40 AM in response to blewis_13by Fan Yang,After I edit the IPTC information in Aperture and "Write IPTC Metadata to Master", the duplicates detection fails. Obviously filenames are not the unique ID for those imported photos. I'm curious why Aperture doesn't update this ID in its database even those photos are only touched by Aperture itself. -
Feb 23, 2011 7:54 PM in response to Fan Yangby blewis_13,I'm a Canon guy so I was ready to just blame my new Panasonic point and shoot. But nope, just imported 40 DUPLICATE images from my 7D whilst the DO NOT IMPORT DUPLICATES option was selected.
BROKEN. DOES NOT WORK. PERIOD. -
Feb 23, 2011 8:23 PM in response to blewis_13by Tony Gay,Be curious to know if there is any link with cameras or workflow? Frank mentions the 40D, what camera(s) are you using and how do you download your images, from card or from camera?
Perhaps if you could all answer the following:

Mar 9, 2011 9:50 AM in response to Tony Gayby Just_Josie,I have photos in Aperture that I took with my d-SLR over the past few years, and now I'm often importing iPhone camera pictures too. Recently got an iPad, and wanted to save my photo albums from Aperture onto that as well. Somehow, some of my projects have gone from one version of each image (plus, for some 'worked on' pictures, additional versions) to 2 versions of each master. At first I noticed it on my iPhone, where there were suddenly 2 of each picture. I just figured something weird had happened one sync, and ignored it. But then today, not only did my "iPhone photos" project suddenly double in size, but the 'Do not import duplicates' suddenly stopped working, and images I'd already imported from days and weeks ago, that I had not deleted from my iPhone, were imported again.
I haven't changed any settings, or done anything to Aperture, nor the phone. I also haven't changed any settings when sync-ing the iPad. I'm totally mystified, but happy to see I'm not the only one with this kind of problem. Given that the problem doesn't seem camera specific, I guess I shouldn't be surprised it can happen with Apple's own camera on the iPhone, but...!
Frustrating isn't the word. Have no idea how to get rid of the duplicates other than manually going through every photo in my library... and then am wondering if they'll all reappear the second I sync my iPhone or iPad again...!
Anyone got any suggestions?
Cheers

Mar 28, 2011 4:37 PM in response to Just_Josieby Jim Bridger,Same for me. Aperture does not recognize duplicates in anyway that I can figure out. I do rename files on import, I do use Nikon cameras. Everything exactly like I used to do in Lightroom and never had a duplicate reimported. Lightroom is bomb proof on this issue. Just wished it did other things as well or better than Aperture. I'm loving Aperture except for this Do Not Import Duplicates issue. Would seem like an easy fix but it's been an issue since my first trial of Aperture Version 1.0. Still an issue today. Frustrated and disappointed but sticking with Aperture and hoping for an eventual fix. -
May 31, 2011 7:10 PM in response to blewis_13by John Kitchen,This duplicate recognition is bothering me too. Therefore I've been doing some testing. Renaming of the files will kill Aperture's ability to recognize duplicates. Identical images with different names are not regarded as duplicates.
What was worrying me, was that if my library already contained an image called XYZ01234.JPG and I tried to import another, different, image of the same name, that the second impart would bypass that image if I had set "Do Not Import Duplicates".
Strangely, this doesn't happen it seems. I have successfully imported two different images which share the same name, so that is a relief.
When all else fails, I sometimes remember to go back and read the manual. RTFM.
This is one of those rare cases where I tried RTFM. Here is what it says:-
"When you import images, Aperture automatically checks to see if any of the images are duplicates of previously imported images. Aperture checks the filename of the master to determine if an image is a duplicate of one in the library. Select the “Do not import duplicates” checkbox to prevent Aperture from importing duplicates."
This is by no means an unambiguous definition of its behavior, but it clearly says that file name is part of the process. Clearly I should have read this some time ago, but better late than never.
My conclusion is that Aperture doesn't work the way I'd like it to, but there must be a possible workaround.
This is not thought through really well yet, but maybe the answer is to eliminate duplicates before importing the images.
At this stage, I can only see one scenario that might work.
- Use referenced masters in the library
- Import masters from the camera to a folder outside the Aperture Library and without reference to that library
- Use deduplication software on a combination of the referenced masters and the newly arrived folder of masters, eliminating any new masters that match any of the old masters.
- Import the remaining new masters
Clunky, I know. But what do you people think? Could this be a way to go?
Your opinions will be valued

May 31, 2011 7:53 PM in response to John Kitchenby Neil G,Maybe or maybe not significant...
When you import RAWs matching already imported JPEGs, you must not change the JPEGs' timestamps, otherwise even identical filenames fail to match. One might infer that when Aperture is sorting out duplicate filenames it also looks at the timestamp.
-
Jun 1, 2011 8:21 AM in response to Neil Gby John Kitchen,Good point! The timestamp is probably what is differentiating different images with the same file name, possibly in combination with other metadata.
I'm interested in opinions from Aperture users who regularly rename images on import, since that breaks Aperture's duplicate detection.

The following are duplicates:

img_001.jpg
I would not expect duplicate detection to 'work' on masters that have been renamed since they are not duplicates of the files being imported.
-
Jun 1, 2011 9:50 AM in response to spikeyjonzeby John Kitchen,On the other hand, people whose workflow involves automatic renaming of masters as part of the Aperture Import process would probably expect that Aperture's duplicate detection would work. For such users, the camera-generated file name has no meaning or value.
-
Jun 1, 2011 10:39 AM in response to John Kitchenby spikeyjonze,True, some users may expect that. However, the definition of 'duplicate' does not change based on a users workflow. If "Do not import duplicates" is enabled, I expect it to do just that.

Jul 25, 2011 12:16 AM in response to blewis_13by Shaun McDonald,I've just come across this issue, and have found that changing my timezone back to the time zone that I used for importing the files originally makes the "Do not import duplicates" function work as expected.
