Taking forever to backup and sync

Trying to backup and sync my son's first generation touch and it's been on the "backup" (step 1 of 5) for over 2 days. It's making slow progress, but this is taking forever. Any ideas? Is there a way to skip out of the back-up process and just do the sync? Afraid to stop the sync unless I know there's a way to shortcut this.
