keychain export?

greetings,

i'd like to export keychain access data. am trying out 1Password and want to import data instead of reentering everything...

keychain has a command for export: File -> export
i've tried selecting everything or individual items in the keychain database, but "export" is grayed out...
my keychain is unlocked...
does keychain not allow exporting?
or is there something else that must be done to export?

i'd appreciate any suggestions...
