AIrport Extreme - Very loud buzzing and fizzing noise on Wireless Access

I bought an Airport Extreme a few weeks ago and on wireless network traffic it emits a very loud buzzing / fizzing noise from the centre of the unit. Is my unit faulty? The noise is very irritating and not something I have experienced from a router before.

Something isn't right as it's not normal for this to happen.

Can you take it in to an Apple store for analysis?

I have had my AE station since november and it has been silent until tonight. I set up a new RAID system on the server today for backup of the multiple macs in the house. After having all the machines (2 laptops and the mini in the kids room start backing up across the wireless network I noticed the aebs sounded like it was frying a tiny strip of bacon and found this discussion. After looking at the server stats I see around 5mbps is going to the server so I assume the heavy load that has been going for a few hours is heating up something in the base station. I have never noticed it when the two apple tv's are going so I guess the traffic hasn't been this heavy this long before. I see from looking at all the complaints on this board that it must be normal or at least noting to worry about as I don't see anyone saying that theirs broke or stopped working. At least it works, the other routers I have had over the years would have choked with this much data flying around. My mail and websites are as quick as they always have been and the tv, roku, wd box that is hooked to an express etc. are all working fine and I am still getting good quality when watching a movie. Apple makes good stuff and stands behind it so I'm not good to go.

Hi,

I just got a new Airport Extreme dual band (Model A1354) and it does make the hissing / buzz noise when there is network activity, not sure if only with wireless or also ethernet.

I made a quick search in google, and it seems that, although most of the times this noises go unnoticed, they are quite usual in some routers (and I assume in other electronic devices even with 'no moving parts'). The cause seems to be a vibrating coil in the DC-DC converter. I found a good explanation in this forum:

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r22742126-New-WRT54GL-router-makes-faint-hissing -noise-

( Note that it refers to a Linksys router, not apple, but I guess the cause is the same).

It seems that it is normal that these DC-DC coils vibrate, but usually their frequency should be not audible... However, depending on the exact voltage of the external supply and the consumption oscillations due to network traffic, the vibration can get into audible margins...

To sum up, I think this is not an issue to worry much about, but a company like Apple should address this little issue as it can be annoying if you have an acute ear...

p.s. I tried to answer to other longer threads about the issue but they are archived. If somebody knows how to post there, feel free to copy my reply.

Actually, the noise is pretty annoying, specially when working in the 5Ghz band... I can perfectly hear the hissing from 6 feet away if the room is in silence: that means that if somebody had to sleep in the room, the router cannot be downloading because of the noise it makes. It is not 'loud' but it is very annoying...

I cannot believe Apple quality controls have passed this unnoticed in so many devices... more taking into account that the problem has been reported for months...

I think I will have to try a replacement at Apple!
