Apple Mobile Device Support won't install, keeps rolling back..

I'm using Windows 7 64bit and i have everything updated. Since I've upgraded my iTunes to version 10.1, I can't sync my iPod Touch with it anymore.

Each time I plug my iPod in,
- the iPod could be detected by windows but not iTunes, and I keep getting the same error message " "This iPod cannot be used because the required software is not installed. Run the iTunes installer to remove iTunes, then install the 64bit version of iTunes""
- my iPod shows up as "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver" in devices and printers

After searching through the internet, I've tried many fixes but none of them worked. I've tried,
- downloading the latest iTunes and uninstalling it and reinstalling it again and again
- uninstalling step by step and completely removed everything as guided by this website ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923)
- extracting the AMDS MSI file from the iTunes64setup and run it separately
- copying the registry files and the whole Apple Mobile Device Support folder from a Vista machine as recommended in some websites
- creating a new user account with admin rights and reinstalling iTunes again after completely removing everything

I've read a post ( http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2531860) in which the user encounters a similar problem as well, and apparently the user solved this problem by replacing the files in C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\netaapl64.inf amd64_neutral26aa9fb28983e9b5
C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\usbaapl64.inf amd64_neutral36363f69e6e22c1b
with files he had extracted from the CAB files within the AMDS MSI installer from the iTunes64Setup download.

But the problem is, whenever I try to extract the netaap164 and usbaap164 files from the AMDS MSI installer, using WinRAR, it says that the archive is corrupted and thus I won't be able to extract these files out.

Can anyone give me any suggestions or teach me what to do? I'm really stucked and lost now. Thanks in advance. =)

Win7 32-bit, AMDS from iTune 10.4.1 distribution.

What worked for me (use it at your own risk, no warranties/guarantees it would work for you 🙂 ) :

1. Start->Run->msconfig

2. Click on Tools tab, select "Change UAC Settings" and click Launch

3. Change UAC setting slider to "Never notify" (first slider position from the bottom)

4. Click OK

5. Restart PC for changes to take effect

6. Upon restart run msiexec /a AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi /L amds.log

/a tells MSI to run install as admin

7. Restore UAC setting as desired.

Good luck

Alex,

I followed your instructions to the letter and, sadly, I come up with the same previous failures. I've been on the phone with Apple Support quite a bit over the last month and they took all my install log I've generated, but still have not been able to resolve my problem. My issue specifically is that AMDS will not install (aka rolls back). Apple believe it is something (a security setting or program) interfering with the AMDS installation. I planned on buying an iPad2 for Christmas and an Apple TV device, but I will probably not since I can't get this resolved yet. Anyways, I tried all the following so far:

After removing ALL Apple products between each install attempt I downloaded iTunes 10.5.1, set the files to Win Vista compatability and 'Run as Admin' then,

Attempt # 1- Installed from a command prompt with Admin rights - No luck

Attempt # 2- Removed ALL my security software and installing - No luck

Attempt # 3-Turned off UAC completely and installing - No luck

Attempts # 4+ - mixing the above 3 appempts methods with still no luck

Oddly enough after iTunes installs and AMDS doesn't, Windows sees my iPhone 4s and I can access my files within it, but iTunes still does not recognize the device since AMDS is not installing. My Apple support called has been elevated 2x upwards up to the devs, but they still have no resolution as of yet, My Apple support guy has kept in touch with me on a regular basis so far and I find no fault with him. I do with Apple itself though. I'd really like this resolved, but no luck so far.

If anyone is insterested in making their own onstall logs, use the following command from an Admin powered cmd prompt (be sure and include the quotes:

"C:\iTunes64Setup.exe" /L*v C:\Log.txt

ITunes must be in the root of C:\ for this to work and no file named C:\log.txt should exist since it may be over written. iTunes64Setup is only for 64-bit PCs of course. This does generate a monster of a text file to sift though, so use something like UltraEdit to help skim through the log.

I had the same problem - tried the complete troubleshooting steps, including removing Apple software in a specific order and re-installing iTunes.

The fix turned out to be the cable I was using. I discovered it was a bad cable when I moved my iPod while it was connected, and I heard the "dunt-duh" sound of the USB disconnecting.

If all else fails - try replacing the cable.

I just started having the same exact problems. There was no update involved prior to sync; everything was working with the exact same system settings until 12:00 today. I ran a sync diagnostic, and this is what I got. Any ideas? I don't want to have to uninstall everything and hope beyond hope that it fixes the problem.

EDIT: All I had to do was restart iTunes. There must have been a problem when it started up, probably attributed to the fact that I was running Trainz Simulator 12 at the time. Man, that simulator is the most problematic program on my computer to date.

Hi! I will try your solution tonight, but here's another thing that I noticed in my Win7 Home Premium 64-bit system: I uninstalled everything Apple says to uninstall, and confirnmed that the folders and files deleted too, but I screwed up the order that Apple says to use when doing the uninstall. Since then, I have opened "Services" and find that Apple Mobile Device still appears there, with status of "Started", but all options are greyed out and completely unaccessible. Maybe the new iTunes version installer sees an entry there and assumes AMDS is up and running OK (even tho it is not OK) and skips that part of the new install. Any suggestions on how to clear that entry out of Services? Norton Utilities 15 is not automatically detecting any related problem in my registry, which seems odd, but Norton has always been hit-or-miss, so I guess I'm not surprised. Thanks! - JW

Hi,

I had the same problem.

I bought a new ipod touch but I wasn't able to get into iTune 10.5.3.3. This was on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

I tried everything :

- uninstalling all Apple related stuff in the order mentioned on the Apple support page

- reinstalling everything

- ...

Now thanks to reading the post of the first poster I've solved my problem.

What did I do ?

1. Restart Windows 7 and press F8. Choose the option "Disable Driver Signature Enforcement"

1. Open the device manager : Start button -> Computer -> right mouse button -> manage

2. Connect the ipod to an usb port

3. Click on Device Manager in the left panel

3. If you see "Portable device" in the list and beneath it "Apple iPod", select this -> uninstall -> delete files also

4. If you see "Universal Serial Bus controllers" in the list and beneath it "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver", select this -> uninstall -> delete files also

5. I don't remember whether I had disconnected the iPod at this point or not

6. Downloaded iTunes64Setup.exe

7. Extract this exe with WinRar

8. Now you see "AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi". Start this as administrator and choose the option "Repair".

At this point the drivers got installed and now it works in iTunes.

I haven't tested yet whether I have to choose the option "Disable Driver Signature Enforcement" everytime now at boot time to keep it working.

I hope this can help others to find a way to connect their iPod Touch

OK I tried just about everthing sugested on this link, then where I found out it would cost me 40 bucks to talk to support I thought I would go to the Apple store and ask them. When I went in they said they were to busy to help me and if I made an apointment for next week they were sure they could help me out. Finally, I just downloaded the previous version of I iTunes and it installed just fine and I am now able to sync. Hmmm might be time to look at Android!
