Q: Apple Mobile Device Support won't install, keeps rolling back..

I'm using Windows 7 64bit and i have everything updated. Since I've upgraded my iTunes to version 10.1, I can't sync my iPod Touch with it anymore.

Each time I plug my iPod in,
- the iPod could be detected by windows but not iTunes, and I keep getting the same error message " "This iPod cannot be used because the required software is not installed. Run the iTunes installer to remove iTunes, then install the 64bit version of iTunes""
- my iPod shows up as "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver" in devices and printers

After searching through the internet, I've tried many fixes but none of them worked. I've tried,
- downloading the latest iTunes and uninstalling it and reinstalling it again and again
- uninstalling step by step and completely removed everything as guided by this website (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923)
- extracting the AMDS MSI file from the iTunes64setup and run it separately
- copying the registry files and the whole Apple Mobile Device Support folder from a Vista machine as recommended in some websites
- creating a new user account with admin rights and reinstalling iTunes again after completely removing everything

I've read a post (http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2531860) in which the user encounters a similar problem as well, and apparently the user solved this problem by replacing the files in C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\netaapl64.infamd64_neutral26aa9fb28983e9b5
C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\usbaapl64.infamd64_neutral36363f69e6e22c1b
with files he had extracted from the CAB files within the AMDS MSI installer from the iTunes64Setup download.

But the problem is, whenever I try to extract the netaap164 and usbaap164 files from the AMDS MSI installer, using WinRAR, it says that the archive is corrupted and thus I won't be able to extract these files out.

Can anyone give me any suggestions or teach me what to do? I'm really stucked and lost now. Thanks in advance. =)

I just started having the same exact problems.  There was no update involved prior to sync; everything was working with the exact same system settings until 12:00 today.  I ran a sync diagnostic, and this is what I got.  Any ideas?  I don't want to have to uninstall everything and hope beyond hope that it fixes the problem.

EDIT: All I had to do was restart iTunes.  There must have been a problem when it started up, probably attributed to the fact that I was running Trainz Simulator 12 at the time.  Man, that simulator is the most problematic program on my computer to date.

Hi! I will try your solution tonight, but here's another thing that I noticed in my Win7 Home Premium 64-bit system: I uninstalled everything Apple says to uninstall, and confirnmed that the folders and files deleted too, but I screwed up the order that Apple says to use when doing the uninstall.  Since then, I have opened "Services" and find that Apple Mobile Device still appears there, with status of "Started", but all options are greyed out and completely unaccessible.  Maybe the new iTunes version installer sees an entry there and assumes AMDS is up and running OK (even tho it is not OK) and skips that part of the new install.  Any suggestions on how to clear that entry out of Services?  Norton Utilities 15 is not automatically detecting any related problem in my registry, which seems odd, but Norton has always been hit-or-miss, so I guess I'm not surprised.  Thanks!  - JW

I am gonna say this error baffled me for months, I was using my old WinXP desktop pc just to use itunes. Here is the simplest and easy way I got it fixed.

I opened regedit with administrator permissions (start menu>type regedit>right click>admin)

and I decided to try changing the ownership of all the affected subkeys to the Administrators group to see if it would fix the key in question. All of the wonky keys appear to be in

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components.

I right-clicked on key 7ABFE44842C12B390AF18C3B9B1A1EE8, selected permissions, advanced, owner tab, and then checked the box to “Replace owner on subcontainers and objects.” Click OK. Regedit complained, “Registry Editor could not set owner on the key currently selected, or some of its subkeys.”

I ignored it and discovered I could now select subkey 83AC89C9A1C48CA45BC56149798C28B6 MIGHT BE ANOTHER KEY!!!!*************************************************

    without tripping the permissions error.

A right-click on this subkey showed that there were no permissions set. I added the account SYSTEM and gave it full control. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< this was the fix!

    Hi,

    I had the same problem.

I bought a new ipod touch but I wasn't able to get into iTune 10.5.3.3. This was on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

    I tried everything :

        - uninstalling all Apple related stuff in the order mentioned on the Apple support page

        - reinstalling everything

        - ...

Now thanks to reading the post of the first poster I've solved my problem.

    What did I do ?

      1. Restart Windows 7 and press F8. Choose the option "Disable Driver Signature Enforcement"

      1. Open the device manager : Start button -> Computer -> right mouse button -> manage

      2. Connect the ipod to an usb port

      3. Click on Device Manager in the left panel

      3. If you see "Portable device" in the list and beneath it "Apple iPod", select this -> uninstall -> delete files also

      4. If you see "Universal Serial Bus controllers" in the list and beneath it "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver", select this -> uninstall -> delete files also

      5. I don't remember whether I had disconnected the iPod at this point or not

      6. Downloaded iTunes64Setup.exe

      7. Extract this exe with WinRar

      8. Now you see "AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi". Start this as administrator and choose the option "Repair".

At this point the drivers got installed and now it works in iTunes.

I haven't tested yet whether I have to choose the option "Disable Driver Signature Enforcement" everytime now at boot time to keep it working.

I hope this can help others to find a way to connect their iPod Touch

OK I tried just about everthing sugested on this link, then where I found out it would cost me 40 bucks to talk to support I thought I would go to the Apple store and ask them.  When I went in they said they were to busy to help me and if I made an apointment for next week they were sure they could help me out.  Finally, I just downloaded the previous version of I iTunes and it installed just fine and I am now able to sync.  Hmmm might be time to look at Android!

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.

The section Install missing components has advice on breaking down the iTunes installer into the individual .msi files which might prove useful if a particular component won't install normally.

Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.
