I purchased an iPhone 4 from Vodafone, staff told me I could unlock the phone for use on any carrier network via iTunes, but can't see how to do it. Am currently overseas and need this phone unlocked so that I can use various SIMs and networks wherever I travel.
Vodafone In Australia does offer official unlocking. I can't say what their exact procedure is, but normally you request the unlock via an online form. The carrier most likely charges a fee and has certain requirements as to length of service & contract fulfillment. If these are met, the carrier processes the official unlock request through Apple, then notifies you either by SMS or email that the unlock has been completed. You then connect your phone to iTunes with a different sim in the phone & either restore from backup or sync your phone to complete the unlock. So, have you contacted Vodafone to see what their procedure/cost is?
