Mail attachments

I'm using Mail 2.1.3 on a 2.4 ghz iMac running Tiger 10.4.11. When I try to attach a file to an e-mail, either by using the attach icon or dragging and dropping, I get "ssing plug-" in the window. I assume I'm missing a plugin, but I don't know which one. I checked the Java prefs app, suggested as a possible fix, but the fix (click on the 2 restore defaults) did not appear in the prefs window. I gather those fixes apply only to Leopard and Snow Leopard. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I opened the prefs panel and couldn't see a tab or button saying "run applets in their own processes." The prefs pane says, from the top: "Java Applet Runtime Settings", then "Java version", j2se 1.4.2 (unselected) and j2se 5.0 (selected) one above the other. Then "Smooth all text in Java applets" (not selected), then "Java Applet Runtime Parameters" with an empty box, then "Java Application Runtime Settings" with j2se 5.0 (unselected) and j2se 1.4.2 (selected), then "Temporary Internet Files".

Sorry if this is confusing. I'd send you a screen shot, but the forums don't permit attachments (ironic, actually, in this case.)

Likely my fault, I'm actually on 10.5.8 at the moment but remembered wrong that 10.4 was the same.

Might try clicking JSE2 1.4.2 box.

From my readings that error seems tied to Java & Safari, some cures were resetting or reinstalling Java, Reset in Safari's menu, reapplying the big Combo update...

Repair Permissions afterwords, reboot.

Nope. Nothing works. Must be a severe app conflict that I can't find. I've done the permissions, and a total OS cleanse with Onyx, but it's the same. I guess the only solution is a Snow Leopard "upgrade" which means the purchase of the upgrade and all the other apps that don't work in Snow Leopard. I think for the time being I'll go back to entourage which is unstable, but allows attachments without grief.

If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

Hmm. Archive and Install seems a fairly robust solution. And the combo update doesn't appear to contain any fixes to mail issues. I checked the info on the Mail app and it lists one plug-in, something called "mailwebplugin.bundle". My old PPC iBook has the same plug-in, and attachments mount correctly in the MacMail app on that machine. Not sure if I mentioned it, but I've had no problems with other apps on this Intel iMac. I wonder if this iteration of Mail (created in 2002) is the problem. Is there a newer version?

I'm running 2.1.3 with 38,665,767 bytes. But my iMac is an Intel machine, so PPC won't do the trick, and the Intel combo makes no mention of a new Mail version. This is not a major crisis, but I've only recently switched to Mac Mail and love the app, especially after struggling with an old buggy version of Entourage. If I have to send an attachment, I'll just boot Entourage and do it that way. As for an A&I, my reading of forum posts is that it's something you do only when you have a serious OS problem, and I don't think Mail attachments rank as serious enough to warrant what is, in fact, a fairly risky operation. My feeling is let sleeping OS's lie. An A&I could stir up some nasty conflicts. I'll move to Snow Leopard eventually, probably sooner than later, but for now, thanks muchly for the tips.
