AVI Converter

I have downloaded quite a lot of files in 'AVI-film' format but I have been unsuccesful in finding software to convert them into MPEG/MP4 to be able to play them in iTunes and to put them on my iPod. So far I have tried several free video converters (which say they support AVI) but without success.

My question is: Are there any free video converters *that support the AVI format*?

Please copy the link of the site to download the software. Your help is appreciated!

AVI isn't really a format; it's a container. The video and audio streams contained within could be made from any number of codecs. You need to have the proper codec installed on your system in order to play or convert them. Check with the supplier to find out which specific codec was used to create the files.

You might want to download the perian codec package and install it on your system: http://www.perian.org/

AVI is a container, not a format, and so no answer exists to this question. Using Perian with MPEG Streamclip or QuickTime Pro provides the best chance of success.

The perian package just adds codecs to your system. These codecs can be used to play videos files in any number of player apps, or convert to other formats using applications designed for conversion like MPEG Streamclip, QuickTime Pro, Compressor, Sorenson Squeeze, etc.

So, to answer your question, use a conversion application like MPEG Streamclip or QuickTime Pro to convert the files ... IF the proper codecs needed were included in the perian package.

I tried to convert the files with MPEG and iSquint but, yet again, without any results.

Jezus Christ, why is it so bloody hard to get files playing in iTunes??

What are the codecs used for the audio and for the video of the file you're trying to play?

I just drag them to Quicktime, let them open, make sure the movie etc is not playing, then click 'save' ,making sure the'save as a self contained movie' box is checked and click ok

Then after that is converted to a .mov file drag to iTunes and play

That's the whole problem: I can't open them with QuickTime Player or any other video player.

Then they are in a proprietary format that does not seem to have a Mac codec that will play them.

You could try opening them on a Windows machine and see if you can convert them there.

Disregard goody2b's advice. As you've discovered, the codecs needed to play the file are not installed on your computer ... they may not even be available for Macs. And if they aren't installed, no application will play the video - not even QuickTime Player.

I use handbrake. It converts avi, mkv, VideoTS, DVD's, etc. to m4v files to be used in iTunes.
It works with my Apple TV2 (to be selected in presets).
You can also choose iPod, iPhone&iPod touch, iPhone4, iPad and Apple TV.

Best of all: it's free!
