I have created a slideshow in iPhoto with captions over each image--style as desired--but when I burn to DVD through iDVD, the captions and type style does not carry over as I created it in iPhoto, iDVD applies its own style with boxes behind the captions.
Is there a way to maintain the format EXACTLY as I've created it in iPhoto to play on a DVD player?
Are you exporting from iPhoto to a full-quality/large Quicktime movie? This should preserve iPhoto attributes, but play the video file with Quicktime Player to check. Then drag and drop the Quicktime file into the menu area of iDVD.
I've tried exporting to a QuickTime Movie but that wouldn't play on the DVD player of our TV. I wasn't aware that you could import a QuickTime movie into iDVD. But, I will try it as you suggest with a full quality/large format. Do I need to select a theme or will this process bypass the themes?

Yup, that format is for Macs (and PCs with Quicktime installed). iDVD is compatible.
Dragging and dropping into iDVD's menu area (not into a drop zone) is an alternative way to bring video files into iDVD. You'll be able to select a theme, change the music for menus, etc. either before or after you drop in your video.
