Does error message from scanner driver install point to cause of trouble?

'Installed a new Brookstone Photo Scanner (Model No. SKU634394) on my iMac7,1 running Mac OS X 10.6.5. For this install, I connected the scanner directly to the iMac using the provided USB cable. For software, I used the provided CD to install the iConnect driver and utilities called DigiPhoto version 1.0. The software installed successfully until the very end when an error message appeared. The error message window was titled "postflight". The body of the error message stated: "chmod: Unable to change file on /Library/Application Support/Brookstone: Operation not permitted". Clicking the "OK" button on this window closed the window. At this point the install seemed to be complete. I then restarted the computer as instructed and, upon restart, the DigiPhoto software started and instructed that calibration of the scanner be undertaken. I proceeded to insert a provided calibration sheet (4x6" white card) into the scanner with the side with printing facing up. By pressing a button on the DigiPhoto window on the iMac desktop, the scanner proceeded to pull the sheet through and creating a file from the scan. This file, "Image0001.jpg", was placed in a special folder, "DigiPhoto", that was created inside the iMac's documents folder. The scanner's printed instruction booklet then indicates that the fourth step in calibrating the scanner is as follows: "Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the scanner calibration." I saw no such instructions on the screen of the iMac. The instruction booklet then goes on to state in bold text: "*Note: If the scanner installation is not started and displayed automatically on the screen, click 'Start', select 'Run' and type in [d:\setup].*" In the window of the running DigiPhoto application, I saw no "Start". There was an "OK" button there, which, when clicked, seems to do nothing except close the window, but not quit the application. When I quitted the application, the application crashed. I would be happy to supply the content of the crash log, but there is not the room here to attach it. I tried deleting the application files (that I could find) and reinstall software from the CD but get the same results. I must admit that I did not delete the files at /Library/Application Support/Brookstone when I attempted the software reinstall so I suppose they could be corrupted.

Any ideas what I should try to get this scanner calibrated and functioning properly?

Barney-15E, Thank you for responding to my post. As you suggested, I deleted the Brookstone folder in /Library/Application Support/ and did a reinstall of the software from within my Admin account. Unfortunately, the steps and results of the reinstall were the same as before. The scanner does work and places a .jpg file in the folder as I described before, so perhaps the calibration process does happen during the install. Unfortunately, the application (driver and utilities software) iConvert DigiPhoto still crashes when you attempt to quit it. If this Apple Discussions site allowed attachment of an image of the crash log, I'd attach screen shots for anyone who can read and interpret the log. Do you suppose that installer not being able to change the posix permissions could have anything to do the crashes at quit?

You have to post the image on one of those image sharing sites and then link to it here. The Help & Terms of Use link has examples of how to link an image.

There could be any number of things causing the crash. The lack of access shouldn't cause it to crash, but based on your description of the installation process, I'm not sure it is very well-written software.

"Note: If the scanner installation is not started and displayed automatically on the screen, click 'Start', select 'Run' and type in d:\setup." +That sounds like a common Windows program installation instruction in regard to drive location and a filename that probably ends in .exe+

Looking at the Brookstone.com website for the product ( http://www.brookstone.com/linkedassetservlet?assetId=324098&languageId=EN)
and reading the .pdf manual, it appears that the calibration procedure *is ONLY necessary for Windows 7 users*.

Since your scan DID create a file, I'd hazard a guess that it's working properly and doesn't need the additional calibration step.

Reading the product reviews, several Mac owners reported that it worked, as well as at least one that encountered a problem. Possibly it's a Mac 10.6.5 issue? I'd try calling the Brookstone 800 number.

Barney-14E, Thanks for the tip about instructions for linking files to posts. Below is a link to 6 screen shots of the crash log that appears when I quit the application iCONVERT DigiPhoto. When I click on the bottom of the "Problem Report for DigiPhoto" window, the application does quit. After reading the content of these screen shots and you see the cause of the problem, please let me know. wallacestuart

kostby, Thanks for looking into my issue and helpful comments. Perhaps you could look at the files of screens shots of the crash log when I quit the application. You can access the 6 files at https://public.me.com/wallacestuart Possibly the log will show whether Mac 10.6.5 is the cause. I'm going to wait calling the Brookstone 800 number (in Taiwan) to see whether some one reading Apple Discussions can offer insight to this issue. wallacestuart
