Portable Stylewriter information please.

Hi,

I have a Portable Stylewriter (M1446) which prints test pages but little else.

That's because I don't have the special cable that is required. It's a Serial-to-Parallel adapter cable. Mini-8 to 36W Centronics.

I'm also missing the battery cover (and the battery) and optional sheet feeder unit.

Enough of the preamble.

Would anyone reading this, who has a Portable SW, mind giving me the part-number for the cable (if known), the part number for the sheet feeder unit and the part number for the battery cover, please. I'm guessing they are printed somewhere on the pieces.

It would make it so much easier to track these items down in search engines - it's amazing how many different descriptions exist for the same piece.

I've tried as many websites as I can over the last five months, even those offering spares with part numbers (in stock or not), without success so far.

I have a number of older Apple systems which I am rebuilding for the pure aestheticism of their design. It's a lot of fun and strangely relaxing, despite the occasional frustration.

Alternately, if you have a faulty yet complete, Portable SW in your loft or other hallowed place, please contact me as I would be very interested in acquiring some spare parts. I'm willing to pay reasonable costs and shipping to the United Kingdom.

Unfortunately, here in the United Kingdom, the Apple is treated with less reverence than elsewhere. Although this has improved over recent years with the opening of more Apple Stores, we simply don't have access to the scale of spare parts and swap meets that are enjoyed in the United States, especially regarding parts for pre-loved Apples.

Whether it's part numbers or transplant parts, I am grateful for you taking the time to read this.

Best Wishes for the holidays and the New Year.

Rob

Hi Rob,

Sorry, cannot help you with the part numbers. However, the printer in question appears to look a lot like Canon's BJ-10sx, so you may possibly want to check that one (or perhaps other BJ-10 versions) for any similarities regarding at least some spare parts. According to the Portable StyleWriter technical specifications, the printer language is QuickDraw. I do not know whether this language is handled within the printer itself, or merely by the special cable. Generally speaking, GDT Softworks supplied PowerPrint MiniDIN-8M to CEN-36 adapters and software for the use of several standard parallel port printers with Macintosh computers.

Saw this post from 2002.

+Actually, the original Portable StyleWriter was an only slightly Applified version of the original Canon portable inkjet printer (as the original desktop StyleWriter was a repackaged version of the original Canon desktop inkjet).+

+All Apple StyleWriter printers were Canon printers modifed for the Mac market (except the last two models, 4100 & 6500, which were HP desktop models). The Portable StyleWriter was unique in that Apple didn't bother to replace the PC parallel port with a standard Mac serial port (as was done with all other StyleWriters), but instead included a special version of GDT Softworks' PowerPrinter software + parallel to serial cable--though it was not identified as such: the driver software looked like another Apple driver and the cable was just "the cable." The full PowerPrint package, as Harbourmaster says, allows printing from a Mac to any number of PC printers, including the Canon inkjet that is repackaged as the Portable StyleWriter. (I briefly had one of the Canon portables -- which was the same platinum color as the Mac--with the PowerPrint package to match my Mac+
+Portable ten years ago.)+

+The driver software for the Portable StyleWriter can be gotten from Apple's download site, but I don't know if Apple supplies the cables. GDT Softworks has since changed its name to Infowave, and then offloaded its PowerPrint solutions into another company called Strydent ( http://www.strydent.com/); might be able to get the cable there, though it'd probably be in platinum rather than the cool PowerBook-matching granite color of the original PSW cable.+

+The Portable StyleWriter was a fairly primitive printer, slow and (since it was really a PC printer) complicated to use, requiring manual feed one sheet at a time (unless you got the optional sheet+
+feeder, which made it a desktop printer).+

Click on my TMM name at left & send me an email. I have some additional info I can send you.

 Cheers, Tom 😉

Tom,

After your trip on eBay to get the part number, I was directed back to a UK website which I had previously visited with no success.

This time, with the part number, I found exactly what I was looking for, brand new part for about $30.

Many thanks for your help on this, I am confident that I will be able to have this printer as a centre piece in my collection - I know I can get a replacement battery from another supplier.

Cheers again and Best Wishes for 2011!

Rob.
