Spotlight not showing applications

For some reason my spotlight index is omitting Applications from its results. I've checked the preferences and Applications is checked to show. Its only just started doing it, done a reboot and still no joy.

Will I need to rebuild the index, or is there something I've missed? If not, then how do I rebuild without having to mess about in Terminal?

Thanks.

System Preferences->Spotlight->Privacy->add the boot volume to the pane and then delete it.
