"The software required for communicating with iPods not installed correctly

When I downloaded the new iTunes, the installation went fine, but when I opened iTunes to play my music, the message

"The software required for communicating with iPods and mobile phones was not installed correctly. Do you want iTunes to try to repair this for you?"

I click on "yes" and another message pops up: "The software required for communicating with iPods and mobile phones could not be repaired. Please reinstall iTunes if you wish to use these devices."

I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes multiple times, but this message does not seem to go away. I've tried plugging my iPhone 3GS in, and, obviously- it isn't detected by my iTunes. How can I fix this? I can't sync my phone until it is fixed... Please help!
