Apple TV Extremely Slow - Please Help

I just received an Apple TV for Christmas and this is my first Apple product that I have ever been disappointed with. It's EXTREMELY SLOW! I am using it wirelessly through my Time Capsule and I have a pretty fast DSL connection. I also have a Roku box and a BluRay DVD player that has internet services as well like VuDu and NetFlix. Movies start almost instantly on all of my devices and play flawlessly except the Apple TV. Movies on Apple TV take about 5 to 8 minutes to start versus only just a few seconds on my Roku box and instantly using VuDu. Is this normal or do I have a defective unit?

I had a similar experience.
My solution was to switch my DNS from Google's DNS servers to my original ISP (Comcast) DNS servers.

For some people, Google and OpenDNS's DNS servers don't work well with the AppleTV 2.

I was having movie trailers take 10-15 minutes to load and start playing. After switching my DNS settings, they now stream almost instantly.

Just wanted to let you all know that I have the same Problem
I own a iMac with 802.11 N WiFi With Airport Extreme I also use an iPhone 3GS WiFi G and have recently Purchased an Apple TV I can never get my Apple TV to hit rate speed of 72 or higher. I have tried everything My iMac hits rate speeds of 270 sometimes Using 802.11 N while my apple TV only hit 72 at the highest even My iPhone 3GS hit speeds of 58 to 60 with WiFi G. I have noticed that even if I set up a separate Network using the 5Ghz of the Airport Extreme I get even lower speeds like down to 38 to 40 on my Apple TV I realy dont have a lot of problems downloading movies per say but there have been times were I have had to wait like 20 min just to watch a 720p video from youtube or Movie Trailer. I can go from my TV to my computer using the same network and get the movie downloaded a lot faster using my computer???? What is going on Apple???? I really enjoy Apple products but I have to say I am somewhat unsatisfied with the Apple TV....What am I doing wrong??? I have tried to move my Airport extreme right next to Apple TV and with no speakers or anything around and I never get higher that 72 or so 🙂 I Want to know is my iMac Airport Extreme Just reading it wrong or What... Please Help Apple????

I have seen the exact same thing. I can only get speeds up to 68 but sustained at 58. The Apple TV is connected to an Airport Extreme on a N network. Both my Iphones obtain 54 on g network next to ATV. Macbook obtains about 200 from next to ATV on same network. My internet connection is a sustained 14MBs off Speedtest from next to ATV. I have gone through the Airport to make sure there was no problem settings. I checked the DNS which is a private service run only through my building. I'm thinking antenna issue...sound familiar?

Any other thoughts?

I cant's believe you are complaining about having to wait for 8 minutes to watch an HD movie, when I want to watch an SD movie it takes 1.5 hours and you really don't want to know how long it takes for an HD movie to play, plus I have no Netflix or TV Series, does anyone know what is the recommended speed for Apple TV to not make me wait that long? In MĂ©xico Internet services are 5 times more expensive than in the US so a half an hour wait doesn't seem so bad when you check the prices, what's the speed for that? Thanks a lot

I agree. If your internet speed is 5mbps you may have to wait a few minutes. I wouldn't say your 5 to 8 minute wait is too far out of the norm for your download speed. Especially if the 5mbps is the stated rate by your ISP and not the actual download rate. If you're getting at least a 6 or 7 mbps download speed there should be no wait at all. Maybe about 5-10 seconds for authorization is all you would have to wait for.

Thank you kjk, your suggesting of resetting the DNS address worked for me!

I had previously set my router's DNS address to use OpenDNS. I switched it back to Comcast's DNS (75.75.75.75) and now my Apple TV is speedy.

My Apple Tv is connected with an Ethernet cable, and my internet connection gets around 10 Mb/s according to speedtest.net, so this was puzzling. Sometimes the Apple TV was fine, but typically in the evenings (prime-time) it was too slow to even start a HD movie.

Thanks again.
