Using AppleTV outside the US??

I am an American using the US iTunes store. I live overseas part of the year and have an old AppleTV that works fine. Even though my country is not supported, I can buy and rent through the iTunes store without problem. The new AppleTV says it doesn't work outside the US. Does anyone know if this is driven by the location of the iTunes store or the IP address of the AppleTV?

iMac, MacBook, MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.6.5)

Hi, I am using my Apple tv, bought in the US, here in Europe and it works fine. The only thing that does not work is Netflix, as you get an error message saying you need to be in the US to watch their content. Renting movies from iTunes works fine.
