Yamaha DGX-230 and Garageband working together

I got a Yamaha DGX-230 and a MAC book for Christmas. My main reason was to take piano lessons using garageband as I am home bond for the most part. I can get audio when I press a key on the keyboard but it really doesnt seem to recognize it. I updated the MAC OS and the GB softwre as well as the driver from Yamahas website. My hope was I would not have waste a couple days playing with it. I really am frustrated thats for sure.

Apple Macbook, Mac OS X (10.6.5)

What else do you want than hearing audio when you press a key on the keyboard??

When you take lessons with GB the program grades you on your performance and displays the keys as you press them. I hear the audio of the keyboard but there is no interaction of the lesson and the keyboard. No recording either.

Sorry, I am not familiar with the lessons. But just to be clear: what audio do you hear? From the keyboard or from GB's software instrument? And are you connected via audio or midi?

I did get the basic midi function to work today. I was able to change the voices and record with GB. My only issue now is the interactive lessons. I her the chord when I push a key in the pc. The chords do show up correctly. Does anyone know any teaching piano programs? I will just try to learn outside Gb. Thanks. D

Derek, or anyone else that might have extended knowledge,

Could you elaborate on how you got the keyboard to recognize with the Mac? I'm having issues as you were, however I've been unable to resolve this yet. Seems like the Mac simply isn't recognizing the keyboard. I'm looking to record using garage band.

For clarification
I'm using a Yamaha DGX-230
connecting via the USB output from the keyboard to the Mac with an A-B usb cable.
Mac OS X (10.6.6)
I've tried downloading and installing the driver from Yamaha's website with no noted changes in connectivity.

I was really hoping I wouldn't be spending hours searching forums to get this operational considering how well everything else seems to work with the Mac.

Does it say "1 midi device detected" in GB's audio/midi prefs?

Okay, this is menu I'd not been on before. I plugged the usb cable in to the mac and then turned the keyboard on and it is recognizing that there is a midi device plugged in. Thanks for the reply, a step in the right direction.

Where should I go from here?

Scratch that. It seems to be recording. No idea why it never registered before. Thanks for the response. I'll check back if I've got more questions.
