iphone 3G battery began to DISCHARGE when plugged into AC

Today, for the first time, I plugged my iphone 3G into the AC with the OEM adapter & cable & it actually discharged the battery super fast instead of charging it. This happened on several different outlets in different buildings. When I got in the car, I plugged it into the car charger and the battery charged up, though not super fast. When I first plugged into the AC, the battery was at 31%. Within a couple minutes, it showed at 21% and continued to fall until I unplugged it. At one point, I plugged it in and it went to 41% and THEN discharged over the next 3 minutes down to 11%. When I got home, I tried again, on the outlet I use nightly and it discharged down to 2%. I changed to the other OEM adapter & cable on the same outlet, and it is now up to 80%. I fear the same thing happening. I have at least 2 cables & adapters at all times since I keep one with me and use it when I have a parent go into the hospital suddenly, a habit I got into when my mother was alive.

This is so weird that it should actually discharge when I plug it in, using that adapter - the newest one by the way but one I have used many times. Anyone have any answers so I know if this is a battery issue, or adapter or cord or phone issue?

Am having the same problem with iphone 3g. Have replaced the battery TWICE. Both times, it charges fine the first time, then when I go to re-charge it, it sits on the charger losing charge. I have a 3gs that charges just fine on the same charger, so I know it's not the charger. And it can't be the battery, because it's the second brand new battery I've installed.

Okay this is going to sound like utter nonsense, but bear with me. I just saw this on another discussion thread, and I swear it's going to sound like I made it up. But they said (and cited where it came from) to take the mute button and flip it up-down-up-down (that's four switches starting with up) then hold down the two buttons til the thing shuts down. Then restart it. Wonder of wonders, I sit in disbelief as my phone is CHARGING. Try it and let me know. I'll see if I can find the thread again and post the citation.

Here it is... This is from another discussion thread.

"I searched the web and found this thread: http://willy.boerland.com/myblog/iph...gingreadthis
I tried it and it worked.
Make sure you switch the mute switch up, down, up and down; then hold power and home for about 10-15 seconds, the phone will shut down, continue to hold the home and power until the screen comes back with the apple logo."

The problem is that it works & charges fine on my music/radio dock and when hooked to the PC or laptop. It works fine on 1 charger. And it worked fine on the other charger until yesterday afternoon. When I first plugged it into THAT other charger, it began by charging then suddenly discharged and continue to do that every time I plugged it into that one charger. I had an electrician friend test it today for problems and he said there is no polarity problem (I had a lamp suddenly reverse polarity once but there was a bare wire inside close to the other wires and it was shorting. But the polarity and continuity tests were okay so that isn't happening here. He hooked the charger to his phone and it was okay and charged his. I showed him how mine was and plugged it in at 99%. Within a couple minutes, my phone was down to 52%. Just my phone and just on this one charger, which worked fine until yesterday.

As the line from The King & I goes, "It's a puzzlement." I will try the up-down-up-down on the mute and holding the buttons and see if the phone charges on that charger after or what and will let you know. Fingers crossed.

Okay I tried it. The phone never came back on again and I held those buttons until I thought my fingers would break, at least 3 minutes after the phone shut off. I turned it on and it took forever to start back up and it took 2 tries to get it to start up (having had to repeat the holding down of both buttons to get it to unjam and shut off again so I could try turning it on again or booting back up). Eventually it did come back on and I have it on the charger in question and it is going up on my Battery Magic meter and the iphone charge meter. It is up to 82% now. Hope this keeps working. Thanks.

So has that mute button thing actually worked for anyone? I guess I've got a similar story. Definitely did some heavy app downloading and wifi use tonight, but that's pretty normal. Then went to plug it up to its usual USB chord, and it gave me the charging sound like normal. A little later I used it to check the time and discovered that the battery had drained more. Actually, I watched it jump from 43% to 39% right before my eyes. I've been searching all over google for some help. Everything i've tried from different cables, different usb ports, to different computers hasn't worked. I JUST plugged it up to my family's PC Laptop, then turned it off, then turned it back on and it seems to be only charging upwards, lol. I was just seeing if this mute thing works. if it does I'll give it a try.

also, are we guessing this is some sort of firmware flaw or a hardware issue?

Okay, so now it is February 2011. No problems since the initial one and then BOOM last night I plugged the phone in when I went to be, which I do every night because it gets pretty low during the day (I like to play my games when I take a break). I plugged in and it was fine. I played a couple levels-no prob. It was charging. When I woke up 4 hours later (I don't sleep much), the phone was shut off and I couldn't get it to turn on. I checked & it was plugged in to the same charger that had been charging 4 hours before. I finally got a screen display and it showed a totally depleted battery, plugged in but the charg level never went up. I took it to a couple other wall chargers and no luck. Wouldn't charge & wouldn't turn on. Finally, opened the garage door, went out and started the car, pulled it out of the garage & plugged in the phone. By the time the car warmed up - 15 minutes - the phone was showing 91% and finally turned on. I plugged it into the wall charger in the house and within 3 seconds it was at 16% then suddenly 10% . . . 9.1% . . . . 5.2%. I pulled the charger base off and plugged the cord into the computer and it has been slowly charging ever since, 3 hours now and is up to 89.3%.

Since it seemed to work the last time, I tried the mute switch thing and guess what. The phone had charged to 30% on the USB connection so I did the Mute Switch thing then plugged it into the charger and IT DID NOT WORK this time. Now keep in mind THIS CHARGER was the one that worked the last time when the other one gave me the problems.

I don't know. I hate to think of the hassle of changing phones and I love my iphone but. . . it is my only phone and I need something to reply on. My health is not that good.
