Iphone 4 vs Tiger

Hi there,

My girlfriend got the iPhone 4 for Xmas, however we are unable to sync it to my computer (MAC OS X 10.4.11) as it runs under Tiger and it only has iTunes 9.2.1.

Indeed, when we connect the iPhone to my computer, it says that we need iTunes 10 so we download iTunes 10... However, iTunes 10 only works under MAC OS X 10.5...

What should we do? Do we need to buy Leopard? More importantly, would it work on my computer?

Thank you for your help

Ben

iOS 4.2.1 requires iTunes 10.1 or greater, which requires OS X 10.5.8 or greater. There is no workaround. If you want to sync your phone you will have to update your computer. If a Power PC, Leopard is the end of the line. Since Apple no longer sells Leopard, you'll have to look on eBay-you need a retail copy, not the gray copy that comes with a new computer. You also need at least 1GB of ram. If an Intel Mac, you can purchase the $29 upgrade disk and go straight to Snow Leopard(it will work). I recommend a minimum of 2GB's of ram to run Snow Leopard.

Stepping up directly from Tiger (10.4.xx) to Snow Leopard (10.6.xx) requires the Box Set package of Snow Leopard. There is no other stand alone install disc for OS X 10.6.

You can daisy chain the install by seeking out a copy of OS X 10.5, then purchase the Snow Leopard upgrade for $29 dollars...but what's the purpose of that. Just buy a consolidated update, and yes, the only way to do it is buy purchasing the Mac Box Set.

That statement is absolutely false. Fact is, the $29 upgrade disk contains a full copy of Snow Leopard and will in fact update an Intel machine running Tiger to Snow Leopard, *assuming all other requirements are met*.

Sorry for the double post but to drill down more specifically into your quote, a previous requirement of the $29 Snow Leopard upgrade is that you're already running OS X 10.5, not 10.4. Please refer to the Snow Leopard page on Apple.com for further reference:

How to get Mac OS X
Snow Leopard.

Upgrading from Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard.
If your Intel-based Mac is running Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard, just purchase Mac OS X v10.6.3 Snow Leopard and follow the simple installation instructions.

Upgrading from Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger.
If your Intel-based Mac is running Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger, purchase the Mac Box Set, which is a single, affordable package that includes Mac OS X v10.6.3 Snow Leopard; iLife, with the latest versions of iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, iWeb, and iDVD; and iWork, Apple’s productivity suite for home and office including Pages, Numbers, and Keynot

I have the same problem. New Iphone4 with Old OSX 10.4.11 on my G4 laptop.
I have the original Iphone and a 3GS. When the 3GS stopped charging, I reactivated my original Iphone. Now that my new Iphone 4 won't synch to my computer, I'll have to go back to my non destructible original Iphone and return the Iphone 4. Its synchs through my mobile me account, but not Itunes

You were mis-informed or you mis-understood. The $29 Snow Leopard v10.6 license is a complete MacOS. You are not required to buy Leopard to upgrade to Snow Leopard. The only requirement is an Intel based Mac.

Please see http://store.apple.com/us/questions/product/MC573Z/A?mco=MTc1MTEzNzc/ on Q&A page.

The (software) system requirements as depicted on the MacOS 10.6 website are written as mere sales recommendations not requirements so that you upgrade all the Mac software including iLife etc..

Please see http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html/
