Kernal Panic Max 10.6.5 - What is the problem?

Hey,

For Christmas this year I got a beautiful new MacBook 13". Having had another MacBook before, when I saw that were software updates, I immediately updated. Since updating my MacBook, I've had 5 kernal panics. My brother also got the same laptop as me, but his is on 10.6.4 and he hasn't had any problems what so ever.

This is the log from my last kernal panic:

Sounds like either something went wrong with the upgrade to 10.6.5, or you've got a hardware problem.

You can reapply the 10.6.5 combo update, download it here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1324

If you're still having trouble you can use the disks that came with your Mac to do an erase and install, then see if the problem continues. You'll have to run Disk Utility from the install DVD to erase the drive first, then run the installer.

Obviously if you don't want to spend time troubleshooting something that's brand new and should work, you can call AppleCare, head to your local Apple Store, or find out where it was purchased from. Apple's got an extended return policy for the holidays (at least in the U.S., not sure if it's worldwide but it probably is), so if it was purchased from an Apple Store or Apple's online store, you can probably just get it exchanged.

Hi,

Sorry about your quandry (I had kernal panics in the past, long story , were not fixable (yet) but still have both 2004 e-Mac's and the kernal panics developed on both after we got both a 802.11n dual band Airport Extreme and a Airport Express (though that was for a shared printer use) both developed those dreaded words-screen , yet when in safe mode and the air0port cards turned off worked normally and conected by ethernet to the new Airport Extreme went online! Airport card back on-ethernet off, restart Kernal panic
answer we got is The new Airport Extreme's do not like 802.11b ? These were both Airport Extreme Cards

* Not that this is your your issue .. but saw this in a www.smalldog.com e-mail newsletter (Tech Tails)

Article= link= *has some other info as well*

and website of Official Mac Reseller New and Refurbished and great newsletters (they are in Vermont)

http://www.smalldog.com

I am sure that You are aware that (even without Applecare , which You can still purchase, not sure positively of the timeframe) You have 90 days of phone support
and a Year on parts (I once scheduled a call and they called within 2 minutes of the arranged or set-up time) Apple's service is Ver, Very Good (compared to the plethora of manufacaturer's out there!) Hope this *"may possibly help" I am unaware how the laptop wireless cards are configured anymore other than they are now 802.11n

(the ones in our emac one was installed as ordered via Apple.com. the other purchased and installed. odd they would both fail at the same time on our end but strange things do happen, my Wife has a 800mHz Imac with the Standard Airport Card (and her Imac is ethernet connected as it will not accept a WPA2 pw running Panther.
We bought a new router as were fed up(to say midly) with a possesed D-Link 802.11G wireless router and a new MacBook Pro came to town in Dec 2009and a new Imac in Sept2010 Anyways Here is the article link and a copy and paste of the article itself
(received the newsletter just this week)

Repair of the Week: Kernel Panics By Matt Klein

If you’ve ever seen your screen turn gray and display a message saying you need to restart your computer (in several languages), you’ve seen a kernel panic. These can be caused by software or hardware malfunctions, and it’s usually easy to figure out what type of malfunction by simply booting your computer off a known good installation of Mac OS X on an external drive.

In our tech rooms, we actually boot computers over the network using NetBoot. If the kernel panics persist while booted over the network or a known good external drive, you have yourself a hardware problem.

This case is a 17-inch MacBook Pro (with silver keys) that displayed the kernel panic screen while booted off the network. The first troubleshooting step is almost always to swap out the RAM. This time, RAM was not the culprit. Apple’s service manuals suggest running their diagnostic software at this point, but it did not come up with any defects.

If you’ve ever used Apple Hardware Test on a computer that doesn’t boot up, then you understand how underpowered and inaccurate these tools can be. What’s available to service providers is only slightly more powerful than Apple Hardware Test, but generally is equally unhelpful.

Kernel panics are tough to pin down, so the best approach is always to strip a machine down to a minimal configuration inside, and add parts back one by one. If the problem persists with the minimal configuration, it’s time to order a logic board. In this case, I added back the hard drive, optical drive, and AirPort card before the problem resurfaced. A known good AirPort card resolved the issue, and the customer was back in business in less than twenty four hours.

Peace

I have actually emailed Smalldog.com and gotten tech help! No guarentee Great Bunch of People!

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the tips. I ran an AHT and nothing came up - so I'm thinking it could be a software problem. I've re-installed back to manufacturer's settings, so I'm back to 10.6.4. I'm going to keep it as 10.6.4 for the next couple of days to see if it panics - but if not, I'll put back on 10.6.5.

I appreciate all your comments - and thanks for the welcome. 🙂

You may be experiencing a Kernel Panic, as shown in Apple doc. #HT1392. If not disregard.

Bad or incompatible RAM is, more often then not, the cause of most Kernel Panics. It could also just need to be reset.

Here's the most used site for Resolving Kernel Panics. Please do all the steps in order, even if you don't think you need to do a certain step.

Here is a great MacFixIt article.

I looked at the X lab site, and tried everything- in order. Kernal Panic. I even sent the MacBook to Apple, they replaced Mainlogic board, RAM, Airport card, and HD. When I erased and reinstalled from DVD, and applied all the updates to 10.6.5, it started displaying the Kernal Panics. So, I am thinking it is a 10.6.5 issue. I am going to try leaving the MacBook on 10.6.?

Hello again,
I've run an AHT and turned up nothing and I reverted back to the software that my Mac came with, which was 10.6.4 and I've had no problems - no kernel panics what so ever. So I'm thinking that it some how has to do with 10.6.5, although I have no idea why the latest Mac software would cause such a thing.

It shouldn't. I have 10.6.5 on two of my Macs and it's totally smooth sailing.
I would download the 10.6.5 Combo update from this site (Software Updates may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.

I've been having the exact same problem. MBP 17" i7 purchased in Sept 2010. I was running 10.6.4 out of the box and everything was fine. Then upgraded to 10.6.5 and the machine started locking up. The screen would freeze up, couldn't use the mouse, no keyboard response...nothing. Couldn't do any kind of combination keypress...it just wouldn't respond to anything but holding down the power button.

Then I reverted to 10.6.4 and everything was fine for about a month. So I decided to up it to 10.6.5 again. After that my Mail app would crash regularly...I mean a few times a day I would get ("Mail unexpectedly quit...") and I've been sending all my crash reports to Apple. A couple of days ago I started getting the lock up again.

It seems to only happen when I'm watching Netflix or if I have a Netflix video open (whether it's actually playing at the time or not).
